Post Outing Comments: What a great day of fishing. With a storm on the horizon, a hearty group of 50 scouts and families made there way to the Irvine Lake fishing hole, and while the catch count was a bit low, the fun and good times were as special as it gets. Photos of the fisherman (and ladies) at work are posted on the Shutterfly Site.
Our plans for the March Fishing trip are changing a bit. The new date will be Sunday March 25th,
as this works better for the Irvine Lake people as well as our Webelos 1
and 2 dens who are still working hard to get ready for the Webelo-ree
on the weekend before.
A link to the Irvine Lake is here
(http://www.irvinelake.net/) for you to take a look at. We should be
able to obtain the discounted group rate, if we can get 25 commitments.
Unlike the Kayaking, we will be committed once we make the reservation,
so please be sure you can attend. The top level details are as follows:
Date: Sunday March 25th, 2012...7am until 4pm
Where: Irvine Lake, 4621 Santiago Canyon Road, Silverado, CA 92676
Cost: Adults - $17, Children (12 and under) - $9 (based on group rate of 25 people)
Parking: Free
Fishing Poles: Bring your own or rent for $10 per day, 2 poles max per person
Bait: Bring your own (non-live lures or live bait (night crawlers or mealworms only)), or buy in Tackle Shop
Limits: 5 fish per person, except Bass, which must be released back if caught.
Lunch: We should be able to have access to a picnic area - Pack 620 will likely provide treats, with bring your own lunch planned.
Please let me know if you would be interested in joining us...along with the count of fishing adults and children.

On Sunday February 5th, 2012 St. Hedwig's Parish recognized the Boy, Girl, and Cub Scouts for their Reverent attention to both scouting and the catholic faith. Special recognition was made of those boys who earned their Religious Award in 2011-2012, with both names read in mass as well as posted in the parish bulletin. |

Post Event Comments:Congratulations to all who participated in our Pinewood Derby 2012
activities today and especially to all the winners, both on the track
and in the Car Design competition. Our 2012 Pinewood Derby Pack Super Final winners:
1st: Alexander Brown - Tiger; 2nd:Jude Jackson - Wolf; 3rd:
Braden McCafferty - Wolf 4th: Kyle Hogue - Tiger
The Pinewood Derby
Subcommittee is proud to have been able to have hosted another great
event - with a few minor changes from the past and some excellent new
(and useful) video enhancements. I can not say enough about how hard
they all worked, to make things go smoothly and to handle whatever issue
arose. To Trish, Steve, Andy, Mark Bar, Mark Bal, Craig, Karen, Barb,
Dave (and all the Tiger parents), as well as our Boy Scout volunteers
(Daniel, Michael, Stephen, Conner, Paul, Tim, Nathaniel, and Stefan), my
sincere thanks.
While it is always a long day - one that takes a
great deal of effort and care to put together - we believe that the Cub
Scouts will remember fondly the day for a long time to come. It is the
culmination of a process...to design, build, show, and race their
car...one which they can call their own. The results may not always be
1st place, but the winning comes from the personal efforts with their
moms, dads, grand-dads and other family members to complete the effort
and learn along the way. All of the Boy Scouts who came back to
volunteer today were former Cub Scouts of Pack 620 - giving back to the
Cub Scouts of today. We know how much that means to Pack 620 and it is a
key point to make to your own sons - in case it was not apparent.
On Sunday January 15th, 2012 our "boy made" cars will roll to victory
again at our annual Pinewood Derby races. Start thinking about your car
designs and get ready to purchase those car kits and legal accessories.
Details of the rules are posted below and links to helpful information can be found on
our Useful Links
page. The races are open to boys, siblings and parents as well. The
event is sure to be great fun for all, but don't wait, as we are racing
just 2 weeks after the holidays are over. The Pack 620 Pinewood
Derby Sub-committee is forming now. If you would like to be a part of
hosting and running the day's events, please let Scott know. The rules are about the same as prior years, but we have
clarified that the cub scout cars must be 7" long maximum (body and all
items attached), as well as that the wheels made of spokes are not
allowed...solid walls only. If you want to know how the winners made
their fast cars last year...take a look at the following book - Pinewood Derby Speed Secrets - Design and Build the Ultimate Car by David Meade
......but be warned...not all secrets are legal and you could end up making a car that must race with the parent and sibling cars!!!
The event will also include a Potluck Lunch, with assignments for food items as follows:
Tigers – Lunch item (easy serve) Wolfs - Lunch items (easy serve) Bears - Lunch items (easy serve) or Salad Webelos I - Desserts Webelos II – Salad
Please be sure to bring enough for at least 10 people, as our crowd seems to eat more than at an average event. |

Post Event Comment: On a cool clear morning, over 35 of our Pack 620 family members came out to post flags honoring those that fought and gave so much for our freedoms. A great job by all!
For the fourth year in a row, the Cub Scouts of Pack 620 will participate in posting
flags, to honor our service men and women on Veterans Day. The event
hosted by Troop 295, brings together the Boy, Girl and Cub Scouts at
Forrest Lawn cemetery in Cypress, where small flags are posted above the
head stones of our honored vets. The activity occurs annually at around
8am, includes a flag service and a short speech by military
representatives, with donuts and hot cocoa provided to the participants.
Each group is assigned an area of the cemetery to walk through,
read the marker to determine our service people, and post a small
wooden flag in the ground. The site of our scouts dressed in their Class
A uniforms...honoring the past heroes, as well as the flags waiving
across the green fields, is quite inspirational. |

Post Event Comments: A group of 31 hearty Cub Scouts and their family members trekked to the top of the Trabuco Canyon hills, to see the great view of Catalina and the surrounding Southern California landscape. The Google mapping of the 3.8 mile overall hike is presented on the attached file. Atop the hill were the artifacts of two Eagle Scout projects, placed there for all to enjoy after making the 2 mile walk up the hill. Sighting tubes marked with the features in view and a metal plate on a stone pillar, showing the map of the region, served to entertain all who took a look. Many thanks to Eagle Scouts: - Cameron Jonsson from Troop 818 Rancho Santa Margarita, 09-Nov-2002 - Sighting Tubes - Todd Sterling from Troop 787 Mission Viejo, 1993 - Ridge Line Map Pack 620 is heading out for a day of hiking and picnic lunch in the O'Neill Regional Park in Trabuco Canyon. Our adventure begins at 8am on Sunday October 9th, when we will meet at the St Hedwig School parking lot, next to the baseball field. We will drive down to the park (directions) and head out on a 3.5 mile adventure. More details on picnic plans and alternative post ideas will be posted shortly. |

The 10th Anniversary of September 11th was recognized by Pack 620, by participation in flag ceremonies over the weekend of Sept 9th-11th. Along with fellow Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from St Hedwig parish and school, the boys first served as an Honor Guard for the Friday school flag raising. Over the course of the weekend, our boys also participated as a part of the Color Guard, for the flag procession at the beginning of all church masses. Great Job by all.
