Training for leaders

To ensure a well run program and the safety of the boys, the BSA and the Baltimore Area Council require cub scout leaders to receive training for the jobs that they do.

What courses are required of which leaders?

All leaders must take Youth Protection Guidelines (YPT), which is offered both online and in the classroom. If you follow this link, it will guide you through creating an account and taking YPT online, if you can't get to a classroom version.

Being a trained leader in the Boy Scouts of America means you have completed:
  • Youth Protection Guidelines (Good for two years online or three years in person)
  • New Leader Essentials
  • Position Specific Training – Cubmaster, Den Leader, etc.

Some of the basic courses are available online, at the BSA online learning center. If you want to take one of these courses you will need to create an online learning center account. For the Council and the pack to have a record of your training, you can use your 8-digit BSA id number to help create this account (you can add it later if you don't have one yet). Contact Sue McCarty or Ken Ross if you don't know your number. Please give or send a copy of your training certificate to Sue McCarty, the training coordinator for the Pack, so we have a record to show our compliance with BSA rules.
