Akela's Update - April 2012

Akela’s Newsletter  April 2, 2012


Welcome to pack meeting Number 7 of the 2011-2012 year. Here is some important information on upcoming activities and other pack happenings:

·         Next Pack Meeting: The next pack meeting will be held on Monday May 7th from 6:30 to 7:30 in the school Cafeteria.  The theme of this pack meeting is Health and Fitness.

o    It will be a standard pack meeting with awards and entertainment provided by our scouts.

o   The awards for the Uniform inspection, completed in December, will be given out at this pack meeting.

o   Summer Camp fees are due to the Pack by that meeting (5-7-12). Visit www.pack39.com to sign up for summer camp!

·         Science Center sleep over – April 28th and 29th

o   Check in time for the CT Science Center starts at 6:00Pm and goes to 6:45Pm with activities starting at 7:00 Pm

o   You should plan to have dinner prior to arriving to the science center, and plan to be up until

o   See separate Overnight policies packet for your review and understanding.

o   You are encouraged to carpool as much as possible to save on the $18 parking fee for overnight parking.

o   There is still room for additional pairs to attend this outing… I need to know tonight (4/2/12) if you would like to attend and have not signed up or paid.  Payment from all registered families is due to Mike Steinbrecher tonight.

·         WEBELOS 2 crossover/ WEBELOS 1 / Bears campout/ Outdoor campfire. April 20, 21, 22nd. This will be held at Camp Johnson in Bolton.

o   WEBELOS 2 are invited to camp Friday night (as a WEBELO) and then Saturday night (as a Boy Scout) with the Troop. Parents are needed with the boys Friday night, but can either go Home Saturday night, or stay with the Pack until Sunday Morning.

o   WEBELOS 1 and Bear scouts should plan to arrive at the campsite on Saturday morning at about 10:00.

§  You will set up your site prior to lunch and then join the WEBELOS 2 and Boy Scouts for an afternoon of activities.

§  A bag lunch should be brought by each attendee and Dinner will be provided by the Scout troop.

§  Parents need to camp with the cub scouts on Saturday night as well.

o   The Boy Scouts are putting together a weekend full of Scouting exercises and activities including a camp fire on Saturday night for any Cub Scouts that would like to attend.

o   All cubs planning to attend should plan to bring some desert or snack for after the campfire on Saturday night.

o   The weekend should be completed by 10:00 on Sunday Morning.
·         Parent/ Leaders meeting scheduled for Thursday May 3 at 7:30 in the school cafeteria. This is our final planned leader’s meeting of the School year, it is open to any parent that would like to attend and take part in planning Pack activities.

·         Pine Wood Derby District races are scheduled for Sunday April 15th starting at 10:00 and going to 5:00. All scouts are invited to enter their cars in the races for this day register at the following link. (http://www.ctrivers.org/Event.aspx?id=2388) This year the races will be held at Gengris Dodge/ Jeep/ Ram located at 460 Connecticut Boulevard in East Hartford.

o   WEBELOS 2 race from 10:00 to 12:00

o   WEBELOS 1 race from 11:00 to 1:00

o   Bears race from 12:00 to 2:30

o   Wolfs race from 1:00 to 4:00

o   Tigers race from 2:30 to 5:00

·         Pack Cookout Sunday June 10th from 3:00 to 6:00 there will be fun games to play between the Scouts and parents… please plan to attend…. RSVP on the Pack Website (www.pack39.com)

o   Location and additional details to be finalized and shared via e-mail at a later date.

o   This will be the final pack meeting prior to the start of the summer.

·         Cub Scout Summer Camp – July 22nd through the 27th at Camp Tadma in Bozrah CT.

o   This is always a lot of fun for the boys, and any adults that might choose to stay with us. We are always looking for more adults.

o   Sign up for this week of resident camp is due by the pack meeting in May (7th). There is a link on the pack web page to sign up for this as well.

o   See Michael Steinbrecher for additional details or if you have any concerns about you scout attending camp for the week.

·         Volunteers needed – The following positions are open and volunteers are needed to fill them. Please consider helping the pack to provide your son with a valuable Scout Program. I would be happy to discuss any of these positions/ jobs with you. (see additional sign-up sheet to be circulated)

o   Assistant Pack Leader

o   Popcorn Kernel to take over next year – Speak to John Arruda for position details

o   Summer Camp/ Camping Chair – must attend summer camp with boys and be willing to plan additional Pack/ Family camping trip

o   Parents to run events for next year (Committee Members)

§  Pack sleep over… make reservations; collect money; give pack updates and ask for participants

§  Blue and Gold Banquet

§  PineWood derby and concessions

Welcome to pack meeting Number 5 of the 2011-2012 year. Here is some important information on upcoming activities and other pack happenings:

      At this meeting we will do our yearly Pack Olympics. There will be five stations that will last for 12 minutes. We will operate as a “round Robin” with dens moving in a clockwise rotation to each event.  Also at this meeting, you will receive the pinewood derby cars, so if you did not get one contact your den leader. 

·      Next Pack Meeting: The next pack meeting, the Blue and Gold, will be held on February 12 at 4:00 to 7:00 in the school Cafeteria.  At this pack meeting, the scouts will be receiving their rank advancement. (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, Arrow of light)

o         This is considered our formal event for the year, it is important that the scouts wear their full Class A uniforms.

o        Dens are asked to bring the following items.

§         Dessert for their tables (bring extra plates and napkins for dessert)

§         Table decorations… the theme is resourcefulness… good luck! Use your imagination.  Suggestions include tablecloths, placemats, centerpieces

§         I would like each den to have a den cheer.  It should be based on the den name.

§         Plates and utensils for dinner will be provided.

·      Pack swim – January 29th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Glastonbury Healthtrax fitness club (Exit 8 off Route 2 west- take a right off exit, then right at light, then right into first driveway. Healthtrax will be in the building all the way to the right.)

o        We have reserved the pool for 2 hours. We are allowed up to 30 boys in the pool at a time. Siblings are welcome.

o        We will have a Boy Scout Life Guard available to teach the swimming Belt Loop and to sign off on the Aquanaut activity badge for any WEBELOS that do not have it.

o        There are changing rooms and showers available

o        Parents are welcome and encouraged to swim and to help watch the scouts.

·      Parent/ Leaders meeting scheduled for February 2nd at 7:00 in the school cafeteria. This is our planned leader’s meeting, but I want to open it up for any parent that would like to attend and take part in planning Pack activities.

·      Pine Wood Derby Car Workshop in the school Cafeteria on Friday Night February 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00. We will have saws, sanders, templates, good ideas, and specialty tools for your use. We will offer secrets from past winners as well.

·      Can Drive at the Congregational Church – Saturday February 11th from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. We need every scout to volunteer to work at least one hour during this event.

·      Movie Night February 17th in school Cafeteria from 6:30 to the end of the movie. Scouts and siblings are welcome to come in their Pajamas. Bring a sleeping bag or blankets and pillows to spread out on the floor and enjoy a family friendly movie. The Pack will provide freshly popped popcorn. Families are welcome to bring drinks and other snacks to enjoy during the movie as well.

·      Pinewood Derby- Sunday, March 4, more details to follow.

·      www.pack39.com - The Pack webpage is UPDATED…. Tom Paquette has taken over as the Web Master for the Pack. He has updated the page and it is full of all types of valuable information. Den leaders please forward copies of your den schedule to him and he will update the pack calendars with the information. (webmaster@pack39.com).

·      Facebook: “Like” Cub Scout Pack 39 for Facebook updates.

Welcome to pack meeting Number 4 of the 2011-2012 year. Here is some important information on upcoming activities and other pack happenings:

      At this meeting we will do our yearly cookie swap and The Pack will be taking pictures for the Pine Wood Derby licenses.  Have each scout fill in the picture sheet with the appropriate information and bring up with them for the pictures.

·         Next Pack Meeting: The next pack meeting will be held on January 9thth at 6:30 in the school Multi-Purpose Room This pack meeting will include the Pack Olympics. Each scout should wear their CLASS B t-shirt (yellow t-shirt with Blue pants).

o   Dens (except Tigers) need to come up with an activity for this meeting. The activity should be fun and last about 15 minutes. We will run this meeting like a round robin with a station change every 15 minutes.  There will be no flag ceremony or awards at this meeting.

·         CT Wale Hockey Game: On December 17th ; The game is at 7pm (XL Center) for the Hartford CT Wales vs. Providence. It is a specific Scout night. All Scouts will get a patch and there is a “special holiday surprise”. Scouts should wear their Class A uniforms (full uniform with scout Shirt). We had a great turn out of people interested in going I believe we will be in excess of 50 people

·         www.pack39.com - The Pack webpage is UPDATED…. Tom Paquette has taken over as the Web Master for the Pack. He has updated the page and it is full of all types of valuable information. ·         Reminder - Date changes:

o   The Blue and Gold will be held on February 5th (Sunday) in the school cafeteria from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. This year’s theme is “Resourcefulness” and it celebrates Boy Scouts of America 102nd Birthday. Dens should plan to make table decorations that have to do with the theme “Resourcerfulness” and remember it will be the 102nd birthday of BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA.

·         Volunteers needed – The following positions are open and volunteers are needed to fill them. Please consider helping the pack to provide your son with a valuable Scout Program. I would be happy to discuss any of these positions/ jobs with you. (see additional sign-up sheet to be circulated)

o   Web page administrator- Filled (Tom Paquette)

o   Bottle drive chairman – schedule and run bottle return days. Can get info for setup, locations and return procedure in place for other volunteers to help run.  – Filled (Ray Kaiser)

Welcome to pack meeting number 3 of the 2011-2012 year. Here is some important information on upcoming activities and other pack happenings:

·      Next Pack Meeting: The next pack meeting will be held on December 5th at 6:30 in the school cafeteria. This pack meeting will include the Uniform inspection, and the annual cookie swap. Each scout is asked to bring in 2 dozen cookies. All attendees will be able to walk through the line and chooses cookies to have there, or to bring home. The pack will provide milk to have with the cookies.

·      Uniform inspection overview. Each scout should wear their full uniform including the following:

o        Scout shirt – blue for cubs and beige or blue for WEBELOS

o        Matching scout pants – green slacks with beige shirt and blue slacks with blue Cub Scout shirt. Jeans will result in 1 point off the inspection score.

o        Scout belt

o        Appropriate neckerchief with slide of current rank

o        All patches in the correct location on the uniform current rank badge in place

o        Appropriate socks – dark blue for cubs and green for WEBELOS with beige shirt and green pants

o        Scout hat

o        Cub scout smile and positive attitude

o        Neat and tidy appearance – Fingernails, clean hands, shirt tucked in and buttoned correctly, pants straight, shoes tied, And hat on straight.

o        Shoes should be hiking boots, or a brown shoe… Sneakers will not result in a deduction, but will not provide a higher score either.

·      Date changes:

o        The Blue and Gold will be held on February 5th (Sunday) in the school café from 4:00 to 7:00. This year’s theme is “Resourcefulness” and it celebrates Boy Scouts of America 102nd Birthday.

·      Pack Swim – Camp Hemlock in Hebron is closing this year, they are not accepting any dates for swim parties. Does anyone have suggestion/ connections with another facility?

·      Volunteers needed – The following positions are open and volunteers are needed to fill them. Please consider helping the pack to provide your son with a valuable Scout Program. I would be happy to discuss any of these positions/ jobs with you. (see additional sign-up sheet to be circulated)

o        Popcorn transporters and sorters (1 day – December 3rd (at least 4 people needed)

Akela’s Updates

The following items were discussed at the Pack meeting that was held last night (5-16-2011). I will try to provide this type of update for your use and so that people that were not at the meeting will have the same information.

 

Dates/ activities discussed

·     Friday May 20th -Kids night at Marlborough Congregational Church. Geared toward 2nd through 6th grades. 6-9pm includes pizza, snack, ice cream sundaes, punch. Age appropriate movies, games, and more. A remake of Teen Night for the younger set! Drop off the kids and have a nice dinner out with your spouse!

 

The cost of the night is $15.00 and Reservations are required. Please contact Maggie Hannon at (margaret.hannon@sbcglobal.net) with your reservation… number of kids, times if not 6 to 9, etc.

·     Sunday June 12thPack Cook-out. Location to be determined, we are currently working on having food donated… update with needed items, location, and times will follow… watch your e-mails
