Webelos I

The 18-month Webelos Scout Program prepares boys who have completed third grade or are age 10 but have not yet completed fifth grade or reached age 11 1/2 to bridge into a troop. Pronounced "WEE-buh-los", the word "Webelos" means WE'll BE LOyal Scouts. After earning the Bobcat badge, a boy may earn the Webelos Badge and Arrow of Light Award.

Bobcat Rank
The first rank that every boy must earn when entering the Cub Scouting Program is the Bobcat rank. After a Scout earns the B obcat Rank, he can begin to work on his Wolf Rank.

Advancement Sign Off
Each Webelos is supposed to take his handbook to the den leader or assistant den leader for sign off when a requirement is completed. This is a change from having a parent sign off every activity. This change prepares the scout to have a Scoutmaster sign off each advancement requirement in Boy Scouts. There is more responsibility put on the Scout to remember and bring his handbook to meetings and get it signed.

Activity Badges
Webelos Activity Badges are colorful metal emblems (pins) that are pinned to the Webelos Colors. The Activity Badges form the basis of the 15- or 18-month-long Webelos Scout Program which prepares Webelos Scouts to bridge into a Boy Scout troop.

Requirements may be worked on during the Webelos den meetings and at home and with the help of the Scout's family. The requirements are either completed during the den meetings or at home with the den leader's approval. Projects are then brought to meetings to share as well as to be approved by the Webelos Den Leader or Activity Badge Counselor. A pin is awarded upon completion of the requirements at the next Pack meeting.

Webelos Colors
The Webelos Colors is a yellow, red, and green emblem onto which the Webelos Activity Badges may be pinned. It is worn on the right sleeve immediately below and touching the U.S. flag if no Patrol patch is worn (covering the Den and Quality Uni
t insignia). If a Den emblem is worn, the colors are pinned under and touching the Den emblem Patch. Pack 3842 will presented the Webelos Colors when a Webelos earns their first Webelos Activity Badge.

Webelos Rank
It is the goal of the Pack for Scouts to complete their requirements to earn their current rank by the February Blue and Gold. However, rank completion is not required and Scouts have until the end of the school year to complete
their rank requirements.

Webelos Compass Point
Webelos Scouts can earn the Compass Emblem and Compass Points once they have earned the Webelos rank badge. It  is awarded after earning seven activity badges (four more in addition to the three earned for the Webelos badge). For each four activity badges earned after that, a compass point device, one for each remaining cardinal direction, can be pinned on the on the emblem in the "E," "W," or "S" positions in any order chosen. The emblem is worn suspended from the right pocket flap button.

Belt Loops and Pins
Webelos Cub Scouts can complete and repeat Belt Loops and Pins at any time.

Den Names
Webelos Dens may choose to pick a Den name, instead of wearing the Den number. Names may include any regularly stocked BSA emblem including the Fox Den, the Lightning Den or Roadrunner Den. Names that may not be chosen include the Tiger Den, Wolf Den or Bear Den. If the Webelos Den chooses a name, the Den numeral is removed and the Den Emblem is worn in its place. Webelos Dens may not choose the same name.

Webelos Camping
Webelos dens are encouraged to have several overnight campouts each year. These campouts are parent-son events, under the direction of the Webelos den leader. At the den overnight campout, the Webelos den leader may be assisted by the assistant Webelos den leader and the Webelos den chief. Sometimes, additional leadership from a Boy Scout troop may join you.

Once the goals of Webelos are understood, the methods of the program make a lot of sense! There are a few major changes between Cub Scouts and Webelos scouts that are very important to the success of your program. Some adult leaders and parents find it difficult to adjust to these changes so a Parent Meeting to discuss expectations and changes from Cub Scouts is critical to your success. Use parents to plan and lead individual activity badges. The Webelos den leader will have more paperwork and tracking than the wolf or bear den leader.
