Pack 226 Pinewood Derby Rules: 1. All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race. The inspection points are as follows: a. The car must have been made during the current year (the year in which the derby is held). b. The width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches (outside of wheel to outside of wheel). c. The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches. d. There shall be at least 1 ¾ inches separation along the entire center length of car (inside of wheel to inside of wheel). e. The distance from the bottom of the car to the bottom of the wheels shall be at least 3/8 inch. f. The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces. g. Axles, wheels and body wood shall be as provided in the kit. Only official BSA wheels are acceptable. Wheels can be sanded or shaved to remove surface imperfections, but the treads must be left flat. h. Wheel bearings, washers and bushings are prohibited. i. The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs. j. All details added must be within length, width and weight limits. k. The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices. l. No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car. m. Lubricants must be dry on the axle at race time. Wet, oily, or greasy axles are not allowed. Over-application of lubricant which results in excessive shedding onto the track is not allowed. Approved lubricants include (but are not limited to) graphite, Teflon, and Nyloil. 2. Once registered, a car is not allowed to be handled by the owner, unless otherwise directed, until the race is complete. Repairs, if required, will be performed by the race committee with permission of the car owner. 3. If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc., the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and automatically loses that race. If, on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will be run a third time but without the disqualified car. |
Pinewood Derby 2009 Announcing the Pack 226 Pinewood Derby. The derby will take place on 25 April, 2009 at Howard Peeples Park. The races start at 1 pm. Awards will be given out for the following: Most Legal A note on the last award category. No secondary propulsion is allowed. Cars must be driven by gravity only. NO MOTORS. Each car will run a minimum of three runs for its best time. The top cars in each heat will advance to the semi finals and then the finals. Cars can be purchased at any Scout Shop, at: or from our District Commissioner Mace Felton. To buy from Mace simply let the Cubmaster know and he will reserve one for you. Cost is $4.21 a kit. Additionally there will be a parents' race for parents that want to build a car. This event will take place after the boys race their cars. The second Tuesday of March we will have miter saws and a table saw at the church at 6 PM to help with the cars. This is in lieu of a meeting that week.
