My relationship with Cuban cigars started when I met a guy named (Let's call him Mr.X). Now Mr.X was a well known Cigar aficionado in the community. For those who don't know, a cigar aficionado is basically another name for an expert.
I ran into him at a bar, when smoking outside on the patios was legal in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Now when I went outside, he was puffing on this long stick. I knew it was a cigar but something was different . . .
The smoke that was coming out of that cigar smelled amazing - almost like someone was smoking chocolate. So I was like "Hey Buddy, that is a nice cigar!" and the guy goes "Yeah it's Cuban!".
I literally stopped for like a minute because I've never seen a Cuban cigar EVER in my life. I thought they only existed in movies.
So we got to talking and apparently, Mr.X loved talking about Cuban cigars, it was his favorite hobby apparently. He started telling me about the history of Cuban cigars and if it wasn't discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, the white man wouldn't know about it all. As you can tell, the guy had a sense of humor so I stuck around.
I started getting very interested at this point (And I just ordered another pitcher). So he started telling me all about Cuban cigars, the brands, the history, pretty much everything. I had no idea that Cuban cigar have a rich history and tradition of their own.
So after about 45 mintues of Cuban cigar 101, I asked him two things and left.
What are you smoking right now?
He replied: Montecristo No 4
Than I said:
Where can I get one?
and he said "Vancouver Cigar Company".
I thanked Mr.X and guess where I went right after :)
