The three-state Connecticut River Watershed Initiative is Funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and coordinated by the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission (PVPC), in cooperation with the Connecticut River Joint Commissions (CRJC), the Franklin Regional Council of Governments(FRCOG), the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the UMass Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), and 18 cooperating organizations. The co-sponsors offer matching funds of (29%), or $392,675 demonstrating strong local commitment to this project.
The project schedule runs from December 2007 through December 2009.
The project addresses the most significant water quality problems of the Connecticut River watershed:
• major bacterial pollution from combined sewer overflows and urban stormwater;
• extensive streambank erosion;
• threats to public water supplies;
• nutrient loading from agricultural runoff.
To address these problems in a coordinated, watershed-wide approach, our goals are focused on:
• Improving Main Stem Water Quality and Public Use,
• Innovative Financing for Stormwater Recharge and CSOs,
• Smart Growth and Low Impact Development,
• Innovative Public Outreach and Participation.
The project includes:
• real-time water quality monitoring with genetic bacteria-source identification,
• bioengineering and riparian buffer planting for streambank erosion control,
• innovative financing for controlling stormwater and CSOs,
• smart growth tools to protect public water supplies, and
• low impact development tools to control agricultural runoff.
