Welcome Back, Parents!

Upcoming Events:

-Wednesday August 19- Picture Day! Important for all, as we will have a school yearbook.
-Thursday August 20- Camp Sweet Parent Meeting 7pm in the gym
-Saturday August 22- Camp Sweet/CSS Work Bee
-Friday August 28- No Classes- Meet the Teacher

Math/Science:
-We are full swing into math and science already. The students have had two circle inquiries: the first one to discover the relationship between the Circumference and Diameter of circles (where they discovered 'Pi'), and the second to use Pi to relate the length of a circle's radius to the total area it takes up. From this, they developed a few formulas: d= 2r,  C= (pi) x diameter, and   Area= (pi) x radius x radius.  We also talked about what it means to square a number and how the area formula has the radius squared.

-The next step is for students to design a Mandala (circle art) that shows the things they value most in their lives. There is no due date set for this assignment at this point.

-In science, we are starting by introducing a few different note-taking techniques. Now that the students have textbooks, they will be required to use them to preview and review each concept. This should involve some note-taking. About 7 different styles of note-taking will be discussed and a few will be practiced.

Humanities:
- We began the year with our first poetry assignment that was turned in on Friday. It was a poem based on, "Instructions for my Mother" that we titled "Instructions for my Teacher."
- We are in the process of creating personal posters introducing us and employing some of the graphic design skills we will be working on throughout the year. There is not a firm due date for this yet.
- The students have been re-introduced to the Multiculturalism with the 195 challenge. The goal was to list as many of the 195 countries in the world as they could. We will be completing the list and discussing the demographic make up of Canada. If you would like to see the 195 click here: http://geography.about.com/od/countryinformation/a/capitals.htm
- Please ensure your child has a quiet reading novel for class. Our school library will be closed for a short time and students need to have something to read in the morning.

Fine Arts:
-As you should have discovered from the notice that went home, the students had some level of choice in their Fine Arts. The class lists for each Fine Art should be compiled later this week. Ms. Peebles has updated her website for dance and drama. It is accessible from the CSS home page, but I have included the link as well. http://web.me.com/css_01/CSS_Performing_Arts/Welcome.html

Physical Education:
-The students have their Off-site Boating component of PE this Monday and Friday. On Friday, 7.4 needs to be at school by 8 AM

Electives: Here are the electives available for term 1 and their explanations. Students will be signing up Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning.
