Math and Science

This year in Math, we will be exploring some new concepts. These will include properties of circles and parallelograms, transformations, & integers and algebra in more depth.
In Science, we will start the year with the Plants for Food and Fibre unit and the Interactions and Ecosystems unit. The main project in these units will be a field study in the Weaselhead. Other units we will explore will be Structures and Forces, Heat and Temperature, and Planet Earth (Geology).

Concepts we have covered so far:
  • August- November
    • Properties of Circles
    • Discovering Pi
    • Developing Circle Formlas
    • Mandala Creation and Podcasts
    •  Solving Circle problems. (Area of Pizza POW, How far do your car tires travel in 3 rotations?...)
    • Problem Solving Math Crate- 7 problem solving activites and games that will be completed in groups
    • Transformations Investigation (Math)- we will be investigating and describing the artwork of MC Escher. We will then be replicating/ creating our own "Escher-like" art work.
    • Area of Triangles and Parallelograms
    • Proportional Thinking- using proportions to solve problems
    • Plant Investigation- modifying the needs of plants and recording the results of the modifications. (I Have set up a WIKI in which the students can comment on their peers' plant investigations. It is also a place to store their work. Please feel free to visit the wiki to see the progress of the project. These are the wiki sites:
  • Fractions! Adding and Subtracting. Potentially a project involving the use of fractions in music.
  • Explorer Project proposals have been completed. In class time is more than half over. Experiments/engineering needs to be occurring at home. Explorer Project Presentations will begin January 5.
  • Upcoming Projects:
    • Heat and Temperature unit introduction- basic concepts in this unit include:
    • heat energy needs and technologies

      thermal energy*

      particle model of matter

      temperature

      thermal expansion

      change of state

      heat transfer

      insulation and thermal conductivity

      thermal energy sources

      energy conservation

    • Heat and Temperature Project: Energy Audit of each student's home.
    • Math: Intro to percents and decimals in relation to fractions. Some mental math and discussion of personal strategies for solving problems. We will also be looking at operations on decimal numbers (adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying). This is a carry-over from what we started in grade 6 and is essential for algebra.
    • Weaselhead Field Study (Science)- We will be designing tests to perform in the Weaselhead based on the research methodology presented to us by scientists. We will then decide, based on our tests, if the Weaselhead is a healthy ecosystem. We have decided to tentatively reschedule this project until the spring. The project required more preparation than was initially thought, and will need ground that is not covered in snow. Still looking forward to it! SPRING TIME!
