Rather than use Microsoft Excel, you might try Google Spreadsheet. It has the majority of the features most classroom applications require. It allows for charts, gadgets, sharing and comments.
Another great feature is the ability to link a form to a spreadsheet. You can design a survey and have the spreadsheet collate the results. This can then be added to you Google Sites page as in the Going Global project site.
