The following are descriptions of the tours that we as docents give. This is what is on our poster for this year which goes out to the schools and public and is on the FAC website.
Learn about American and world cultures, history, social studies, psychology and the creative human spirit with our interactive gallery tour by trained and knowledgeable docents. Tours are followed by an art lesson at Bemis School of Art. Tours and lessons explore the visual components of art, including line, shape, color, pattern, texture, composition and content. Adapted for age level. Two hours. Available year-round Journey Into Art Junior-Pre K--1st grade This shortened version of the original Journey into Art experience is designed to engage and develop young minds (pre-K through 1st grade) with a 30 minute tour and 45-minute art lesson. Art and Artifact-3rd grade and up History is alive at the FAC. Your students will remember this history lesson as they experience the diverse cultures and arts of the Southwest and Hispanic peoples through a docent-guided gallery tour, a hands-on look at artifacts, and a "make it and take it " art project. Focus may be on early Colorado Indians, Plains Indians, the Pueblo Peoples, or Hispanic Heritage. Two hours. Journey into Theater Come play with us on an interactive tour through our galleries which combines and compares the components of visual arts and drama. Students will view paintings and sculptures to inspire the imagination, and then participate in improvisational drama games based on what they see and feel. They will bring art to life with characters and stories as they learn techniques of storytelling, movement and voice. The tour includes a visit to the FAC’s SaG¯aJi Theatre. A 90 min. to 2 hr. tour, depending on age. Journey into Writing-2nd - High School Write poetry inspired by art. Both poetry and art speak to our imaginations through power of images. This unique tour joins the visual arts with verbal arts in an ekphrastic writing activity. Docents will lead an in-depth tour through the FAC galleries, discuss the art, and provide writing prompts for students to express their responses. This activity expands the student's ability to look, communicate and respond in writing to what they see. A variety of poetic forms and structures will be chosen -- 45 minute museum tour with 30 minutes to one hour writing lesson. Saturday and Sunday Tours A Docent is available on both Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 for walk-in, impromptu tours. Visitors may request tours of any art pieces in the current permanent collection, special exhibits, sculpture of the FAC history and architecture. All weekend visitors are welcome to join the tour. Tours for Adults Design a docent-led tour for your club or any group of adults focusing on the current permanent or special exhibits, the sculpture, the history and architecture of the building or the theatre. Music Room 108 Art Lessons: FAC Permanent Collection: Because of the broad range of art in the permanent collection it is hard to cover every style. The art lessons will either be landscapes, Chihuly, or abstract. To be more accurate about 60% of the time landscapes, 35% Chihuly, and 5% Abstracts. The reason for this it the teachers can go over many basic art elements within the context of landscapes. They can also specify different styles and even roll abstract into that. The teachers will ALWAYS ask the students what they saw at the FAC, what struck them, what they liked, etc, to better get an idea of how to structure the lesson. These are good things to go over as they are walking to the art lesson. Elements discussed: Line, color, composition, and shape Landscapes: focus more heavily on composition (middle ground, foreground, background), Perspective, line. The younger kids will be more simplified heavy on shape and line. Older kids focus more on perspective, details, and transforming a landscape to make it your own. Chihuly focuses more heavily on line, shape, and color. The project done with Chihuly is usually designing their own glass sculptures on paper using shape and color and then cutting them out to collage onto another sheet of colored paper. Clarification on weather cancellations of docent events. Although tours ARE canceled when school D-11 is either delayed or canceled---our docent projects such as gallery walks, B&E's, meetings, etc. are NOT canceled when D-11 is delayed--- UNLESS the weather conditions are particularly treacherous. In that case, you will get an e-mail from me or the Chair of your meeting that the docent event is canceled. If you do NOT receive a message, the event will take place. But if D-11 cancels school for that day, the docent event will automatically be canceled. School Delays Policy The Bemis Tour Coordinator (Stephanie) will be calling all school tours on that day to check the status of the tour, regardless of whether or not the district the school is from is on a delay. After checking the status, the Tour Coordinator will call the Tour Captain(s) for all tours that day and explain the situation and whether or not the tour is on. Tour Captains are responsible for notifying scheduled docents. When there is a delay in District 11 the tours are not to be assumed cancelled. The Tour Coordinator with call you with tour status information. If Day Chairs have questions about the day in question, call Stephanie Williams, Tour Coordinator at Bemis
