Students are Creative and Practical Problem Solvers – SWE #1

Students are Clear and Effective Communicators – SWE #2

What I want you to learn from working on this SWE:

  1. internalize ensemble performance concepts and apply that knowledge to individual performance.

  2. structure rehearsals based on pre-specified musical goals, and

  3. reflect on, critique, and improve their group and/or individual rehearsal skills.

All items on the checklist must be completed and turned in together.

(Each journal entry should be dated. You may keep journal entries in a notebook or typed on the computer. Each journal entry must be turned in to Ms. Kendzia on each due date.)

_______ Due 10/27/10 - Journal Entry #1: Choose one song that you are rehearsing with your ensemble (band or chorus). Listen to one professional recording online of this song (from YouTube, Project Playlist, Pandora, etc.) What's going on in the recording and in the sheet music that made you choose this song for the SWE? Describe which musical characteristics are happening in the recording. Which musical elements do you enjoy in the recording? (At least one paragraph)

_______ Due 11/1/10 - Journal Entry #2: Preparing for a concert involves goal setting. Describe in detail three musical goals you would like to achieve in the first two weeks of rehearsals. Your musical goals must be based on the following musical terms: tempo, rhythm, pitch, articulation, dynamics.

(At least one paragraph on each musical term.)

_______ Due 11/8/10 - Journal Entry #3: After the first two weeks of rehearsing, your musical goals are achieved. Describe in detail three musical goals you would like to achieve for the next three weeks. Describe the changes and improvement that should occur from each week. Your musical goals must be based on the following musical terms: dynamics, phrasing, expression, tone quality, texture, improvisation. (At least one page. Include all goals.)

_______ Due 11/15/10 - Journal Entry #4: Rehearse piece chosen for these SWE's with the whole ensemble. Reflect on how your musical goals were achieved (or not) from what you chose in your previous journal entries. (At least one page)

_______ 11/15/10 - Record piece chosen for these SWE's using GarageBand, with the whole ensemble.

_______ Due 11/18/10 - Journal Entry #5: Listen to the GarageBand recording on the CSD #13 Music Website of your performance and respond using the adjudication sheet (2nd page of SWE). You will need to reflect, answering all of the sections on the adjudication form and why you gave the ratings you did. Write a summative evaluation of your performance, using the facts from the performance adjudication sheet. Your teacher will respond to you with their comments in your journal, in regards to your adjudication based on your recording.

(Turn in your adjudication form with this journal entry).

_______ Due 11/23/10 - Summative Reflection: Write a statement reflecting on your experience writing musical goals. What was easy, difficult, surprising, frustrating, energizing, and/or interesting about this experience? How was creating musical goals helpful toward rehearsal goals? List the resources you used for this SWE, and how you can find them. (At least one page, typed.)

TURN IN SWE'S WITH ALL WORK COMPLETED. TURN IN SWE RUBRIC WITH WORK.

SWE will not be evaluated unless all work and rubric are turned in.
