Askam Event Report

posted 10 May 2012 12:17 by XCC Website Manager

The sun shine, the trails were drying out and the beer was very good.

Firstly, a big ‘thank you’ to all who came and enjoyed the joys of Askham, Howtown, Martindale and the Lowther valley. Thanks to those helping at the start, especially Peter Eagan who manfully issued the maps before riding the event himself and stopped to help fix a fellow riders chain. Thanks are also due to The Punch Bowl Inn for allowing us to stage the finish outside the pub, and the residents of Askham and area.

My sincere apologies to all for not getting to grips with the SI kit, but despite my best intentions (four days in the week before hand set aside for prep) there was some confusion with delivery of SI kit, which was no-one fault and top marks to John Houlihan and Graham Fielding for last minute assistance. Thank you also, to Paul Vousden for the donation of two Mapdecs as prizes - www.mapdec.com but given the circumstances we decided not to award any prizes, especially something so classy.

So, there are no excuses, I will do better next time. This was only my second time planning an MTB O event and the first was a long time ago as an evening Lanequest. Consequently, the scores are ‘unofficial’ and simply a self-submission by all riders. The great thing about this sport is that the vast majority do it for fun, and whilst I can appreciate it is very frustrating busting a gut to get to the finish before the clock ticks over everybody seems to know if they are under or over time. Many people were brutally honest in confessing their sins and Andy Conn crossed the line announcing himself as ‘disqualified’ as he rode a footpath which clearly should be a Bridleway. However, he was not the only one to do so and other misdemeanours were unearthed in the inevitable post ride review and refuelling session, and so his score is included.

It was the week from hell; anything and everything went wrong, with the last straw being the driver’s window fusing on my car just as the rider’s began to finish, with me sat laptop in hand ready to rock. Worst still was the local print shop delivery very poor quality copies that had been ‘helpfully’ distorted to fully fit A3; don’t take you wedding photos there unless you want everyone to look fatter (but thinner if you have a portrait shot!) Hey-ho the beer was good....

Listening to the comments and feedback I’m pleased we provided something for everyone and there was no one obvious route with plenty of choices. Some people reported a few controls as not being there, but all were found when I collected them afterwards. Sadly, some people didn’t get a copy of the additional Control Descriptions, and my controls tend to be discreet but very accurate, and one or two riders were guilty of just assuming they knew where they should be, without reading the description.

There seems to be differing opinion as to how obvious a control should be, but I have found over many years if they are very obvious and very visible then the tend to go walk about, especially if they have to go out a few days before. We also had ‘Control-P-Print’ problems on the morning of the event as well, hence the shortage of additional control sheets.

So what did we learn? Planning is great fun, I’ve really enjoyed it although it takes a very long time to plot, plan, re-fine and create a quality event. Several people seemed keen to get involved and stage more events, and we do need more people helping at events. I’ll be very keen to help anyone else wanting to stage and event, and I hoping to do another event in this area before the end of the year to make amends for the glitches and imperfections.

Everybody had fun, no-one got injured, no serious complaints.

Hello Potential XCC Organsier for Summer 2012

posted 23 Nov 2011 04:02 by XCC Website Manager

XCC are keen to continue with the summer series for 2012.  We are aiming to identify organiser dates and venues for 2012 and get everything confirmed by 15th December 2011.

We will all need to up the ante in terms of producing fliers / advertising the series / etc etc.  XCC will provide common template for you to add you event details to.  XCC will be asking you to add all necessary details to the BMBO calendar page.

For 2012 all 3hr or more events will be able to count towards the national series so this may help improve numbers

XCC will be breaking each event to contribute a small amount towards the end of season prizes.
due the the very low numbers at events in 2011 we are not in a position to attract a series sponsor.  I have been assured that BMBO will support events to negate any loss providing no rash expenditure has been made.  For the series to have an identity we will all need to agree on certain things that will happen at each event regarding refreshments, prizes, etc.

We will try and get a list of riders who would be prepared to help on the day of the your event f you need them.

Rights of Way

Re-discover your area!  Cumbria County Council (CCC) have produced an interactive G.I.S. based map of all the Rights of Way in Cumbria.  It details the type of permission, including footpaths and bridleways, and the up to date routes of the paths.
Many routes are now not as shown on Ordnance Survey maps.  So before you complain about changes to the route, check here to see what's new.

Routes have information concerning category changes, diversions, and their reference number used by the council for identification.  Should alterations, not have been recognised, then the route numbers can be referenced when reporting to CCC.

Beweldeth Race Report - Round 7

posted 21 Oct 2011 02:16 by XCC Website Manager

A final total of 50 riders took part in the last round of the XCC Summer Series on Sunday with an age range from 13 to 74 !!!!! Very impressive particularly in the extreme conditions, it was a mud fest, and at such short notice.

For those who didn’t already know I should explain this was the event previously planned for 22nd May (when I ended up in hospital) and we managed to squeeze it in at the last minute, so the conditions of the trails were considerably different from those I encountered in April and May when originally planning it; also anybody that thought the facilities a bit lacking have to realise running it from a caravan awning and gazebo which became the only option was only possible with the help of my wife Susan who also did the grub and drinks and helping out with the parking.

Believe it or not we were all lucky with the weather on the day if you consider what we got the day after (when I was collecting the last of the controls in)! My many many thanks to Tony Brand - Barker , John Johnson and his son Ben for the invaluable help they gave me also at short notice and my sometimes riding partner Steve Watson also marshalling in the cars safely and sensibly with Susan.

I received many comments ,which I appreciated, as it was my first attempt at organising, but no actual complaints, although a few considered the map a bit too large even for 4 hours. I had put the start / finish in the middle of the map with the intention of providing lots of route choice and what I thought would be 4 definite loops. I’ve analysed the splits [available here] and was pleased to see that all 30 controls were actually visited, and they were all visited by me several times both for the May event and Sundays!!

I hope the routes accurately reflected what I promised on the event flyer and also the views through the rain and mist, and it must have been a nightmare for the many folk who got punctures with all that mud around, blame the farmers for slashing the dykes.  One was actually doing it on the day!!!

Obviously the scores were comparatively low both with the map size and conditions underfoot, but ALL points were very hard earned indeed so credit to each and every rider for having a day out in some of our special West Cumbrian weather.

Finally, there was a slight glitch re: the penalties in that they did not correspond with those printed on the map, winning scores were unaffected so sorry for this slight error.

The overall winner was Graham Fielding with 288 points followed closely by David Cowgill with 286 and John Rawden with 280 , and the category winners were : M21 =Alan Hartley , W21 =Philippa Liles , M40 = David Cowgill , W50 = Anne Plant , M50 = Graham Fielding , M60 = Henry Syska , X40 = Alistair /Jane Hornsby , X60 = David / Miriam Rosen , Generation = Chris Whitby /Alex Chaudhri.

All in all I hope it was a satisfying experience for everyone, and hope to see all of you again soon.

John Johnston (J.J.)
