MBO

About the Mountain Bike Orienteening (MBO) format.

What is MBO?

MBO is used to describe the shorter format of bike orienteering. They differ from MBO Score in the following ways :

  • Traditional orienteering maps are used (usually 1:10,000 or 1:15,000), containing far more detail.
  • Competitors visit controls in a fixed sequence, although there are variations such as MBO Score where a time limit is imposed instead.
  • Duration is shorter, typically taking 1 to 2 hours for a competitor to complete their 15 to 25 km course.
  • Events are usually held within forests containing a good network of tracks and paths, providing a variety of route choices.
  • The enclosed nature of the event area, typically 5sq km, makes them ideal for younger participants.

Overall, MBO requires faster, more accurate navigation when compared to Trailquests.

Development of MBO in the UK has mainly been pioneered by traditional foot orienteering clubs such as EBOR in the north. During 2002, their sixth season, they put on monthly events between March and September, some being on the same weekend as foot orienteering events using the same venue.
