Update on exporting from ProQuest Databases to RefWorks

posted ‎‎Nov 19, 2009 11:30 AM‎‎ by LL Parker

ProQuest Tech Support sent this reply to my question about difficulties exporting to RefWorks:

After testing this weekend and this morning, I am unable to identify any problem with ProQuest’s Direct Export to RefWorks and the ABI-Inform database in particular. Additionally, we have not received other reports of problems with their service.

Whenever issues arise like this, we recommend first that the internet browsers in use be cleared of all accumulated files from past use. This includes cookies, temporary internet files, and history all accessible via the Tools > Internet Options menu in the browser.

Additionally, here are a couple of issues that RefWorks Technical Services has noted in the past for users who have difficulty with RefWorks:

1.     Pop-up blockers -  This is the number one issue we see in Technical Services. Many browsers or third party programs are stopping the URL from the direct export command from getting to RefWorks servers. The symptoms you will see are that once the end user selects the export button in the vendor's interface, the screen redraws and nothing happens.

To resolve this issue, it is best to make your vendors "trusted sites" in your browser. We must note that some IT services manage the trusted sites at the institution level so end users are not allowed to enter this information. RefWorks Technical Services would be happy to work with your teams to allow these exchanges to take place.

2.     Firewalls - We see two issues with firewalls. They can block the export URL from getting to RefWorks or lose part of it. They can also cache(store) pages to reduce traffic on the network. The symptoms that you will see are that once the end user selects the export button in the vendor's interface, the screen redraws and nothing happens. In the case of caching the first export will take place but subsequent exports do not take place.

Exporting citations from ProQuest to RefWorks

posted ‎‎Nov 18, 2009 12:21 PM‎‎ by LL Parker

The direct export from ProQuest is not working at this time.  We regret any inconvenience that this may cause.  You can export the selected references to a text file and import them via the Import function from within RefWorks.  Please refer to online help for more information on how to do this.

Txt ur Lib? – Participate in a survey about text reference at Criss Library

Criss Library invites you to participate in a survey about texting and library services. We want to know how you prefer to get help from the library, and if you would like to try out a new text reference service we are piloting.  The survey will take you about 5-10 minutes to complete and we will use the information you give us to help us serve you better!  Click here to take the survey.  (Note: The survey is not accessible on mobile browsers so please visit from a desktop or notebook machine.)

Changes to Lab Access in Library

posted ‎‎Aug 24, 2009 6:50 AM‎‎ by Audrey DeFrank

Over the summer, the library completed the second (main floor lab).  This lab is open computing with no log-in required. Visitors and members of the public are welcome to use this lab for their research needs.

The first floor (basement) lab and the instruction labs are priority machines for students, faculty, and other UNO affiliates and are accessed with a UNO Net I.D. and password (It’s the login/password you use for email and other my.unomaha.edu services.)

If students don't know their Net I.D. and password they can go to http://my.unomaha.edu/ to look up your Net I.D. and change your password.  They may also ask at the reference desk on the first floor and the circulation desk on the second floor and we will help you.

Students will need to login for library instruction as well.  Before you bring your students for a class time, please remind them to know their net I.D. and password.

Bound Periodicals have returned to the Library!

posted ‎‎May 28, 2009 8:16 AM‎‎ by Audrey DeFrank

Good News!

Bound periodicals have returned from off-campus storage, and they are shelved on the compact ranges on the west side of the 1st Floor. We are still inserting periodicals which accumulated in boxes during the building renovation, but the collection is open for use.

Current Periodicals will continue to be shelved on the first floor (lower level) near the garden doors.

Please ask at the 1st Floor Service Desk should you need assistance finding periodicals.
