What is in a name?
3M – Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company started off by mining the material corundum used to make sandpaper.
ABN AMRO – In 1960’s the Nederlandse Handelmaatschappij (Netherlands Trading Society; 1824) and the Twentsche Bank merged to form the Agemene Bank Nederland (ABN General Bank of the Netherlands). In 1966 the Amsterdamsche Bank and the Rotterdamsche Bank merged to form the Amro Bank. In 1991, ABN and Amro Bank merged to form ABN AMRO.
Adidas – from the name of the fonder Adolf (Adi) Dassier.
Alta Vista – Spanish for “high view”.
AMD – Advanced Micro Devices.
Adobe – came from name of the river Adobe Creek that ran behind the house of founder John Warnock.
Apple – favourite fruit of the founder Steve Jobs. He was three months late in filling a name for the business, and he threatened to call his company Apple Computers as his colleagues couldn’t suggest a better name by 5pm. Apple’s Macintosh is named after a popular variety of apple sold in the US.
Audi – Latin translation of the German name ‘Horch’. The founder August Horch left the company after 5 years, but still wanted to manufacture cars. Since the original ‘Horch’ company was still there, he called his new company Audi, the Latin form of his last name. In English it is “listen!”.
Alfa Romeo – it is named after Nicola Romeo, while the “Alfa” stood for Anomina Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, or Lombardy Automobile Works Co.
Baleno – Italian word for ‘Lightening’.
BMW – was founded by Bayrische Flugzeug Werke in 1916 to make aero-engines. The name was subsequently changed to Bayrische Motoren Werke in 1922.
Hyundai – means “present time” in Korean.
Coca-Cola – it is also known as “Big Red”. the name is derived from cocaleaves and kola fruits used as flavouring . Coca- Cola Creator John s Pemberton changed the ‘K’ of kola to ‘C’ for the name to look better.
Daewoo- company founder Kim Woo Chong called it Daewoo which means “Great Universe” in Korean.
Fuji – from the highest Japanese mountain Mount Fuji.
Hitachi – Stands for “sunrise” in Japanese.
Intel – Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore wanted to name their new company ‘Moore Noyce’ but that was already trademarked by a hotel chain. so they had to settle for an acronym of INTegrated ELectronics.
IBM – Nicknamed as ‘BIG BLUE’.
LG – combination of two popular Korean brands Lucky and Goldstar.
