Friends in Ireland

Registered Charity Number: 14933

Friends in Ireland was founded by Marian Finucane and John Clarke in June 2002. It was born out of a visit to South Africa in mid 2002 where they saw, at first hand, the dire circumstances of orphaned and abandoned children infected and affected by HIV AIDS.

The aim of projects is to provide residential, feeding, medical care and support for the destitute children who have been orphaned by AIDS and who have nowhere to live. The compulsion to assist the children who live in dire circumstances has led to the establishment of Friends in Ireland housing, feeding and health care projects in KwaZulu Natal and Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Friends in Ireland is a comparatively small N.G.O. with a core component of very committed, dedicated, Irish and indigenous South African workers and volunteers.
They are based on the principle of people-centred development - advocating community responsibility and enablement - facilitating positive change and autonomy.
Working closely with and establishing close communications with local communities enhances the effectiveness of our programmes and projects.

Work is aligned to South African national, local and cultural priorities and is strongly supported by local communities, Municipalities, relevant South African Departments, tribal leaders and other N.G.O’s.

We have a large network of very generous volunteers, corporate and private donors and advisors in Ireland and South Africa.

Since 2007 Friends in Ireland, in conjunction with Sli Eile, has been working with volunteer groups from Jesuit schools in Ireland. In addition to the primary goal of  projects(to provide infrastructural development) students are given a unique opportunity to experience the difficulties faced by the people of these regions, giving them a valuable,  compassionate, human context in which to frame their lives.
