Cross Stitch

What is cross stitch?

Cross stitch is one of the oldest forms of hand embroidery and is, put simply, a picture made of lots of little crosses. The size of the finished picture depends on the number of stitches (crosses) and the size of the fabric used. There are two kinds of fabric used: aida, which is made up of blocks of threads, with one cross being made across each block; and evenweave, which is made up of the same number of threads across as down through the fabric, with one cross being made over two threads of the fabric. Aida is the preferred fabric for beginners, while evenweave makes a finer finish to the design.


My cross stitch history

My Mum taught me to cross stitch when I was about 15 or 16 so I could help her stitch a couple of Forever Friends designs as Christmas presents (I think) for my cousins. I helped her with the first and stitched the second on my own - I was hooked! Since then I have completed a few designs that I didn't think to take photos of, and more recently stitched quite a few birthday and Christmas presents and cards etc.


My love of cross stitch

I was hooked right from the start! More recently though, I find it helps me cope with the pain I suffer from with fibromyalgia. I would certainly recommend it to other FMS sufferers.
