Middle Evolution (2005)
photo prints on matte board
14.5 x 48 inches (as displayed)
The title of this work, Middle Evolution makes reference to a high level order of change that we go through in life. The 16 pictures to the left are of my family - common people to you but meaningful to me. The middle 16 are celebrities - people who were at one time, as common to you as my family is now, but who have traded their common status for common recognition. The flowers to the right represent a return to common - consider it death or of lost fame.
Flowers of course, were once other things and they will recycle into new creations in the future. The atoms that make them, and us up, came long ago from stars and will one day be part of a larger cosmic form. In the between, new identities continue to sprout, each reformed from the only pool of elements that we have to work from. We are simply in the middle of a never ending set of changes.
Each group of prints is mounted in a circle to further reference the circle of life. Each square digital photo is stylized with a mosaic pixelation, using Photoshop Elements. The size of each print is roughly 3.1415 inches square (π inches) and mounted on a wooden board, within a circle of diameter 8*√π inches. On each board, the area of the circle (16π**2) = the sum of the areas of the 16 prints (16π**2), making it a squared circle -- in a manner of thinking.
