On Saturday May 3rd, 2008 at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, the Empower Poly Coalition will be hosting our 2nd annual Be the Change conference, a sustainability-focused student leadership training.
Throughout the day, students, faculty and community members will lead workshops, lectures and activities on various aspects of activism work. From zero-waste event planning and fundraising to public relations and campaign strategies, environmental activists of all stripes will share their ideas and experiences. Students will not just be learning the logistics of making change on the Cal Poly campus, but will also develop the fundamental leadership and communication skills critical to becoming effective community leaders in the future.
The student-led, faculty and facility-supported sustainability movement on the Cal Poly campus has been gaining momentum since the formation of the Empower Poly Coalition in April 2006. Empower Poly, a coalition of sustainability-related clubs and organizations at Cal Poly, was created to galvanize multiple campus efforts by establishing a sense of unity among those active in such efforts through all divisions, departments, and disciplines at Cal Poly.
With all of the energy on campus there are many new students looking to get more involved in the sustainability movement. The purpose of the Be the Change conference is to keep the momentum going by welcoming these future student leaders and providing them with resources and skills to take the reigns of the movement. By doing so, we are creating a sustainable sustainability movement on campus—one that does not die out after one generation of campus involvement.
