the lake is full and we can take the big boats out. D Dock and the boats are being prepared for a

super summer. The first event is the Chili Championship on Saturday, April 14 at 3:00. More to come

so far there are four official chefs who have committed (somehow I don't like that word) and I anticipate

10. The process will be highly organized.

There will be many changes from the last Championship where me determining the winner resulted in

my morals, scruples, and ethics being questioned. I am going to enter my new chili creation: TEXAS

MEANIE CHILI

YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT WILL EXPLODE!

.

More

beginning Sunday, April 22, D Dock will be open every Sunday for whomever wants to show up

and cook on the grills, bring their favorite beverage, swim, or go boating. We have eight or nine boats

available and they will be utilized

some may want to watch the FWBC sailboat races great sights to

see. The racing starts around 2:00

so our Show Me Your Fajitas Party beginning at 3:00 will allow those

who raced to come and join us.

I think sometime in May I'll schedule my third annual BBQ Iguana in Tijuana (my spelling) party

where

men do all the cooking and women are expected to show their appreciation! Listen to the song

"Mexican Radio" by the Wall of Voodoo.

Finally

we are looking at something special for the annual Lake Raftup in August. You may apply for a

crew position on The Other Woman for this event at any time.

Your Hosts: Paul Ruhl, "D" Dock Jeff, Bo Diddley, and Arthur (and a bunch of others who take care of the

boats and do the beautiful work on the dock and deck).

MODERN ‘TIL MIDNIGHT

Saturday, April 14

6 pm–midnight

$15; free for Modern members

This annual event allows the community to enjoy everything the Modern has to offer during extended,

late

night hours: live music, exhibitions, films, gallery activities, and unique fare from Café Modern. The

special exhibitions

Glenn Ligon: AMERICA and FOCUS: Katie Paterson will be on view along with select

works from the Modern’s permanent collection. Throughout the evening there will be special tours in

the galleries. Admission includes access to galleries.

The following lineup of musicians will perform outside against the Modern’s reflecting pond:

School of Seven Bells

Guitarist Benjamin Curtis and Alejandra Deheza bring a distinct and mysterious combination of futuristic

beats and harmonious melodies known as psychedelic or indie pop. In concert, Curtis can often be seen

manipulating various electronic devices in between guitar segments following Deheza's angelic voice.

Air Review

The Dallas rock quintet’s dynamic shows have allowed them the opportunity to share stages with the

likes of Portugal the Man, Bowling for Soup, Blue October, The Boxer Rebellion, and One Eskimo.

Calhoun

“The phrase ‘pure pop perfection’ is likely an overused crutch in the lexicon of music criticism. Also, it's

likely typically used for fare that usually finds itself residing on the Top 40 end of the dial. With all of that

out of the way, allow us to proclaim that Calhoun’s newest album, Heavy Sugar, is indeed pure pop

rock

perfection.”

Kelly Dearmore, Best of Texas

The Angelus

Led by the enigmatic vocal powerhouse Emil Rapstine, whose brooding tones and mesmerizing stage

presence bring to mind any number of iconic front men from Morrissey to Nick Cave, and backed by four

young men who quietly summon up epic sounds that build like storm systems and burst into bone

rattling sonic downpours, The Angelus often leave even the hardest hearted hipsters teary eyed and

shaken.

Skeleton Coast

The Fort Worth pop rock quartet Skeleton Coast brings listeners a 1960s rock sound with a healthy dose

of modern electronics. Influences include the Beach Boys, Modest Mouse, Pink Floyd, and Roy Orbison.

Mariners Happy Hours changing in 2012

From:
"Meier, LaVoice"

Some calendar updates:

First, several of you have expressed an interest in meeting at Angelo’s for dinner and going to the Stagecoach Ballroom on Friday, January 20.  If you are interested in going, and have not responded back to me, I recommend that you do so for Angelo’s.  There will be plenty of room at the Stagecoach though.  We will meet at Angelo’s at 6:00.  This is rodeo time so we should anticipate a large crowd prior to the rodeo.

Second, Bob Placido and Terry Austin are hosting a Super Bowl party on February 5.  You will receive a separate E-mail for this event, and RSVP’s are a must for the host and hostess.

Third, the board voted to meet at Ernie’s for happy hour on the first Thursday of each month.  In addition, the board voted to meet for happy hour at the following locations the remainder of January:

On January 13, we will join Linda’s Sailing Group at the following Grapevine location:

August News

Thanks to Roy T and Peggy N for their parties on the 4th of July weekend. Delores F took a plane load to the Turks and Cacaos for her annual birthday outing that same week.

We took 5 boat loads out for Moon light sailing on July 15th and 16th. Leaving the  dock as the sun was setting, we were met by cool breezes later that night.

Stop by the weekly Happy Hour a R J Gators  to see if we are going out that weekend. With the constant Texas Heat this summer, it is difficult to plan sailing too far ahead.

Ed E found a way to escape the heat by sailing the Port Huron to Mackinac Race on the Great Lakes. If you are still looking for a cooler climate, Linda Morrissey still has one spot open on her Maine trip in September.

The first weekend in August will be a cool one.

·         First Friday at the Modern will be on the 6th. Stop by the Modern Art Museum  August 5th for Happy Hour and Jazz. Will probably drift down to 7th Street for a bite to eat later in the evening.

·         Liz’s Annual Pool Party will be on Saturday August 6th. It is near the Fort Worth Zoo at 2440 Medford Court West. No cost to attend and BYOB and a dish to share. Check out our Cowtown Mariners website for additional details. We start climbing into the pool around 4.

There are still spots open for Dinner at Ruth’s Chris on August 16th as a part of Restaurant Week. Contact LaVoice Meyer for a reservation.

Stay tuned for information about Labor Day Weekend. We have several things in mind depending on the weather.

On a sad note, we lost a great friend of Cowtown Mariners with the passing of John T.  Spent  many a sunset with John watching the sun set on the water with the music from Out of Africa playing in the background.

July News

The Rock the Dock Party was a giant success. Lots of people up and down the docks.  Fortunately around 5 a giant thundcloud popped up in the west and shaded us from the sun for the rest of the day. Because of storms rolling thru that evening, the boats only stayed out for a short time.

We will try to get some sailing in July after the sun goes down. Stay tuned for announcements.

First Friday at the Modern is July 1st.  LaVoice Meier is hosting. Admission is free, Modern Art Museum in the arts district.

Roy T’s fish fry is Saturday July 2nd on Lake Bridgeport. 301 County Road 1742 Chico Texas 76431.  It starts at noon. Fried Catfish will be provided, BYOB and a dish to share.

Peggy N’s pool party is Sunday July 3rd. 4 to 10 pm. Hurst, Texas. Peggy is providing hamburgers, BYOB. The party is limited to Mariner members and their dates.

Dolores F is leading a group to the Turks & Cacaos July 5 thru the 12th.

Ed E is sailing in his 80th Port Huron to Macanaw sail on the Great Lakes on the 23rd.

It is hot is Texas Brenda and I are going to Napa to cool off

Coming in August-

Elizabeth L’s pool party on August 6th.

Restaurant Week August 16th. LaVoice has 30 spots reserved at Ruth’s Chris

Stop by on Thursdays at R J Gators in the Northeast Mall for happy hour.

June News

Lots of activities coming up for June. As we speak, we have Mariners in France barging down the river.

Let’s start off with Happy Hour at the Modern Art Museum on Friday June 3rd with LaVoice M.

On Saturday June 4th the Fort Worth Boat Club is having the Annual Heineken Regatta. If you don’t sail come out Saturday evening for 3 Fools on 3 Stools playing for your listening pleasure.

The weekend of June 4th and 5th Grapevine Sailing Club is offering a 2 day learn to sail classes on Lake Grapevine.  Check their website for more details.

Timmie M is hosting Cocktails at Sunset on June 10th at her home in Lake Country.

Ralph and Ron are taking a group to the BVI’s June 14th to the 21st.

Plan on coming to the Rock the Dock Party on June 18th at the Fort Worth Boat Club dock. It is a free event. The board is providing boiled shrimp and boats to party on. BYOB and a hors d’oeuvre to share.  If you want to sail later that evening, purchase a boarding ticket for $10 (it will be refunded once you board a boat.)

On June 24th Linda Weinbrecht is hosting Cocktails at Sunset at her home overlooking Eagle Mountain Lake.

Looking forward to July. On July 3rd you have your choice of Roy T’s Annual Fish Fry on Lake Bridgeport or Peggy N’s pool party.

If you still haven’t had your sailing vacation, Dolores F is going to the Turks and Cacos July 5-12th.

The Thursday Happy Hour is at our summer home at RJ Gators. Stop by, Conversation in the main bar and live music on the patio.

Check us out on Facebook or Meetup.

May News

posted Apr 30, 2011 11:50 AM by Cowtown Mariners

April was a busy month for the Mariners. I saw a lot of you at my 4th First Annual Spring Fling on April 2. We had a houseful and someone said cars were parking on the other side of 820.

Jeanie hosted Cocktails at Sunset on April 8th at her Blue top Condos. Kay K. followed it up on April 22nd at Scotts Landing. We were spread across two docks on Lake Grapevine to watch the sun go down.

A group of gourmet mariners gathered at Elizabeth’s for dinner and drinks.  After dinner we followed the old sailor tradition of a port in every girl.

Plan on joining the Mariners on April 29th at Central Market at 820 and Hulen. 3 Fools on Stools will serenade us as we celebrate the start of the weekend. We will try to get the balcony seats so look for us upstairs. You can purchase drinks and hors doeuvers inside and bring them upstairs.

Ed E's annual shrimp boil will be on Sunday, May 1. We will be serving boiled shrimp, corn, potatoes, artichokes, and anything else that fits in the pot. Join us from 2- till 7 at 9133 Westwood Shores Drive at Eagle Mountain Lake.  Tickets are $20 a person and you can go online and use PayPal to avoid the hassle of paying at the door.

Now that it is warmer we are moving the weekly Happy Hours to R.J. Gators at the Northeast Mall starting May 5th. It will be nice to have a large outdoor seating area to take advantage of the Texas outdoors.

The Fort Worth Margarita Society is hosting a Kentucky Derby Party on May 7th   at Aiyoku Steak and Sushi Bar   721 N Watson Rd and HWY 360, Arlington. Admission is $20, Cash Bar and Buffet, DJ (The old Mariner Stewart Turnage himself),  Stick horse Races and Silent Auction.

The Fort Worth Boat Club is having a Moonlight Sailing Race on May 14th. Promise a Boat Club member enough bottles of wine and they may let you sail with them.

Saturday May 21st is a Steak and Shake affair. You can join LaVoice at the Hico Steak Cook-off or Bill Roach at Jimmy Buffet’s Party in the Parking Lot and Concert at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco. See either of those two officers for further details.

Linda M O'K is leading a group on a French Barge Trip on May 27 thru June 3rd. Contact Linda at www.lindassailing adventures.com for more details. Brenda and I were in France the same time last year and the weather is great.

As a sneak peek into June

Ed E. is organizing a Dock Party at the Fort Worth Boat Club on June 18th.

The Fort Worth Symphony will have Concerts in the Garden.

Ron and Ralph are sailing the BVI’s on June 14-24. A great opportunity to have your picture made jumping off the Willie T (also referred to as Skydiving in the Buff)

Dolores F. is planning a trip to the Turks and Cacaos in July.  See Dolores if you are interested in going.

April News

I took a group up to WinStar World Casino on March to see a Rock and Roll show (The Association, Grass Roots, and the Shondells). Now after seeing the members of the bands, I know why they call the music the Golden Oldies.  Played a hand of Blackjack on the way out and won enough to pay the tab for Babe’s Chicken in Sanger that we incurred on the way up.

Brenda and I hosted the Fourth First Annual Spring Fling on April 2nd. Think I am going to have to install a patio on the side yard next year to hold the crowd.

The trips are filling up fast. Ron and Ralph’s trip BVI trip is sold out (you can only get added to that trip if you sleep with the Captain; Ralph is taking applications) Linda Morrissey’s St. Martin trip has only one cabin left.

Pat taught Beginning Sailing Classes for two sessions in March. Note to former Commodore Jeff:  we will be adding a special section on “How to Survive the Cold Waters of Eagle Mountain Lake when you fall off your boat” in the next class.

Now that it is warming up, we are going to have Cocktails at Sunset happy hours. Miss Jeanie Bond is hosting the first one on April 8th at her pool from 6 till nine. The event is free, just BYOB and a snack to share. We will play the “Out of Africa” soundtrack as the Sun goes down.

On April the 29th we will hang out on the balcony at Central Market off Hulen and listen to 3 Fools on 3 Stools. You can buy your drinks and appetizers there and bring it upstairs

Ed E is cooking Shrimp for the millionth time at his annual Shrimp Boil on Sunday afternoon May 1st. Ed, Dallas, and I will be celebrating birthdays for another year.  Tom is hosting the event at his home on the shores of Secret Harbor. See any Club officer for a ticket.

In May we have Steak and Shake on the 21st. LaVoice is going to the Hico Steak Cook-off. Jae is taking her RV to Frisco for Jimmy Buffett’s party in the parking lot with a concert following. Please contact LaVoice or me if you are interested in going.
