Welcome to the Cowley Chess Club website. We are an Oxford club, with around 50 members and 4 teams which play in the Oxfordshire League. We meet every Monday evening (except for Bank Holidays) from 7:15pm at Rose Hill Methodist Church, Rose Hill, Oxford. OX4 4JP (see directions).

New members of all strengths and ages are welcome. The club has an ethos where stronger players are encouraged to help with informal coaching, which is available to all. Monday evenings usually consist of a mixture of social games and coaching in one room, and league chess in a separate room.

Cowley has four teams which compete in the Oxfordshire League and cater for all members who wish to play competitive chess. The first two teams both play in division 1 and regularly compete for the title, while at the other extreme the 4th team gives players who are relatively new to the game their first taste of evening league chess.

We run an internal club handicap competition, where players receive time bonuses depending on their grade. We also organise open blitz events, normally every 6 months just before Christmas and mid-summer. Details are posted on this site at the time.
Club nights and tournaments are always overseen by our CRB checked volunteers.

An interesting and informative club magazine 'The Chequered Board' is produced twice a year and the most recent edition is usually available at the club - free to members. Will Burt, the magazine editor, welcomes contributions for future editions. An archive of past issues in electronic format, dating back to its inception in 1997, is being assembled ...see Magazine Archive.
