The Covane Community Lodge, near the town of Massingir in Mozambique was officially opened in June 2004. The Lodge, situated near the gate to the Limpopo National Park section of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier park, is an ideal location for accommodation for visitors traveling in and out and through the park. The lodge is a community initiative, and was planned in cooperation with HELVETAS, a Swiss organization assisting rural development. The Lodge was built by the local Canhane Community, with guidance from a locally elected steering committee. Construction was completed in November 2003. The Lodge offers traditional dancing, food, arts and crafts and tours with local experts on plants, medicines and local stories. The lodge also offers the more conventional activities, such as trips in boats, walking trails and bikes for hire. The accommodation on offer currently consists of 2 houses, 3 tents and a camping ground. The lodge has a generator, it’s own water supply and is fully staffed by local people from the nearby community. The staff are being trained in formal programs in Maputo, to ensure the standard of service. HELVETAS will continue to support the lodge for another 2 years, working alongside the Canhane Community, and then the community will take over completely.
