The Federal Courthouse Garden (CHG) is a food garden on the highly visible two acre site lying due east of the new Federal Courthouse. It is a collaboration between the City of Eugene, Lane County, the State of Oregon and the Federal Government. The site is a shallowly scooped out vacant lot with only a small building, the old Agripac Cannery office, on the southwest corner.  As this land’s disposition is uncertain, but some years away, the City has leased the land to the university and approved the building of a temporary garden for two principal purposes: as a teaching/skills building vegetable garden for individuals “in-transition” within the criminal justice system, and, as a food producing resource lab for community service endeavors of University of Oregon.  The focus of the CHG is learning through doing, the creation of a productive garden in true hands-on fashion. The food grown in the garden will be distributed to the participants and to currently underserved non-profit groups.
