She then obtained a master of science degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and was employed as a librarian. In 1977 she married George W. Bush, and in 1981 gave birth to twin daughters. During the years her husband was governor of Texas, she worked for children’s causes and on issues dealing with women’s health, literacy, and libraries. As first lady of the United States, Laura Bush has continued to focus on those issues. In November 2001 she delivered the weekly presidential radio address on the hardships suffered by the women in Afghanistan. She was the first first lady—and the only person other than the president—to use this format to speak to the national and international community on an important social issue. Heather Devine - Librarian of the Future

Heather is a 2007 Spectrum Scholar. Heather says: "As a member of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, I am interested in the retrieval and availability of government documents that pertain to my tribe. My tribe is currently working to create a cultural center that will also include a library and tribal archives. This is part of what pushed me toward a degree in library science, because it would allow me to contribute to creating and maintaining such a project. Digital documents and archives have become more important in our fast-paced world because they allow a quick way to both distribute and access information. This information should be available to all who are interested in it, no matter their ethnicity or cultural background. As a librarian, I would like to work toward making such documents more available and easily accessible to the public, and all who have an interest in them."
