Administration Bldg., Pullman Factory complex
Administration Bldg., Pullman Factory complex
The Administration Building is part of the Pullman Factory complex. In 1879, due to the opening of the transcontinental railroad and increased demand for passenger railway cars built by Pullman's Palace Car Company, George M. Pullman began plans for a new factory complex and a complete town to house his employees. Built in the Industrial Age between 1880 and 1892, the Town of Pullman was one of America's first planned communities. In 1879, Mr. Pullman formed the Pullman Land Association to manage and maintain the town. Pullman was located 12 miles south of downtown Chicago at the time. It was designed by architect Solon S. Beman and landscape architect Nathan F. Barrett with parks, wide landscaped streets, and public amenities to create an ideal working and living environment. Various housing types were built, from executive mansions and skilled-craftsman rowhouses, to workers cottages & rowhouses and unskilled-laborers flats. Each home contained indoor plumbing and indoor gas--rate amenities for the time period. Employees rented the homes from the Pullman Company, bought food and clothing in company owned stores, and had their every need attended in George Pullman's town. In 1889, Hyde Park Township, including the town of Pullman, was annexed to the city of Chicago. By 1909, all the homes became individually owned. The Pullman Company continued to maintain the town until 1898 In 1960 the Pullman Civic Organization was formed to save the town from demolition and preservation efforts were begun. In 1991 The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency bought the factory shops and the Hotel Florence designating the complex as the Pullman State Historic Site. In 1998 the tower and a portion of the factory were heavily damaged by fire. Reconstruction was completed in 2005. A portion of the original factory buildings still exist along with Hotel Florence and more than 98% of the original 900 residences. Preservation efforts are ongoing. A walk through the neighborhood is a step back in time.
