  • A torque wrench is a tool used to precisely apply a specific torque to a fastener such as a nut or bolt. It is usually in the form of a socket wrench with special internal mechanisms. It was invented by Conrad Bahr in 1918 while working for the New York City Water Department.
  • A manual wrench which incorporates a gauge or other method to indicate the amount of torque transferred to the nut or bolt.
  • A tool for setting and adjusting the tightness of nuts and bolts to a desired value
  • a wrench that has a gauge that indicates the amount of torque being applied
    calibration
  • (calibrate) mark (the scale of a measuring instrument) so that it can be read in the desired units; "he calibrated the thermometer for the Celsius scale"
  • The action or process of calibrating an instrument or experimental readings
  • Each of a set of graduations on an instrument
  • the act of checking or adjusting (by comparison with a standard) the accuracy of a measuring instrument; "the thermometer needed calibration"
  • (calibrate) make fine adjustments or divide into marked intervals for optimal measuring; "calibrate an instrument"; "graduate a cylinder"

Calibration Target (138/365)
Calibration Target (138/365)
Oh boy, there's a long story here! I'll try and keep it short... A few months back, I had an idea about automatic lens calibration, tried some ideas out then shelved it as I couldn't get it reliable. Last Friday, I thought I'd briefly revisit it. About 60 hours of work later, I got it working :) In that time, I've hacked and extended the Canon API, I've completely drained the big 5D2/7D batteries countless times, I've fired probably thousands of shutter actuations, swapped lenses loads of times, brushed up on my maths for FFTs and statistical analysis and sworn many, many times! This is a target I designed in Open Office Draw in about 2 minutes (inspired heavily by the LensCal target) - lots of black and white high contrast edges. It was taped to the back wall of the office and lit with a bright single mains LED lamp. The big black thing on theleft is the cymbal for my drum kit (electronic). Fingers crossed you might get to see the results of my work. It really is quite quick, accurate and useful, but it still needs some work to make it robust and user friendly.
