Malachy Amaranthus To pluck a peony is to invite a woodpecker to swoop down and tear out an eye. Kalpana’s Malachy Amaranthus first heard this story one evening when he was a child. His grandmother, Julae, enjoyed the sharing of disturbing tales. Unable to sleep, he snuck out to the forbidden Night Garden that rings Kalpana. He found a bush of deep red peonies, grasped a flower at the stem, and began to rip. Malachy was immediately covered in woodpeckers, but he didn’t bat an eye. He could feel them crawling all over his body, yet he didn’t even flinch. At daybreak he made his way home. Most of the woodpeckers flew away as he started to walk, but a hairy woodpecker went down his nightshirt, a downy woodpecker began an elaborate Welsh jig on his head, and a redheaded woodpecker attached itself to the left side of Malachy’s face. And they remain with him to this day. 5 aprons finished
