"Crisis what Crisis?"

posted 3 Apr 2012 02:13 by Anthony Carroll

"Crisis what Crisis" is a new contemporary sequential exhibition at the Coterie Gallery Pack Horse Lane, High Green, Sheffield to be held throughout April in which it deals with the current economic situation through a series of sequential paintings parodying the various elements and persons or organisations which may be perceived to be responsible,

Almost 'Hogerthian' in structure, content and meaning, its focus is on viewer participation in which to interpret and place the onus upon whom they feel is responsible within each aspect of the works and in that respect whilst each work is composed of interconnected symbolism, a title, and suggests questions, it is for the viewer to come to their own personal point of view and conclusion in which their views will form input to become part of the exhibition through a book where opinions and comments can be left.

In keeping with the fluctuating economic situation new works have been added for this exhibition.

CONUCOPIA

posted 23 Nov 2011 07:00 by Anthony Carroll

The new exhibition at the Coterie is an abundence of art covering many styles and techniques in all mediums showcasing the versitility and repertoire of the artists.
Full portraits in negative black and white or in a full colour atmospheric mood  sit alongside traditional colourful garden scapes in which the viewer is invited to delve deeper into individual parts to compare further adjacent work of an abstracted nature.
Continuing a specific medium method which seems to have been prevalent throughout the year in previous exhibitions at the gallery has been the use of textiles, embriodery and stitching in artistic form which causes us to ask if these skills of yesteryear are in for a resurgence.

Titanic

posted 14 Sep 2011 06:24 by Coterie Gallery   [ updated 7 Oct 2011 07:46 by Tony Carroll ]

1st to the 31st September 2011
The 'Titanic' is synonymous with the sinking of a luxury liner on its maiden voyage and 2012 will mark its 100th anniversary, an event which has created its own history through numerous books, documentaries and films, and which now features in a new exhibition at the Coterie Gallery, PackHorse Lane, High Green, but what of the men who built the ship?.

The 'Titanic was launched from the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast at 12.13pm 31st May 1911 after 3 years of building, what at the time was a massive feat of engineering, and to commemorate this human endeavour local artist Martyn Hague has produced a series of paintings to create the scale and process involved in the building of this iconic liner.

Inspired from his childhood views of liners in Southampton and an engineering background gave him an appreciation and understanding of the mechanical side of the 'Titanic's' construction.

Martyn has used monotone colours to emulate the atmosphere of the original photographic records taken by Irish photographer Father Brown showing the scale and perspective of both workers and their creation.

The Exhibition runs from the 1st to the 31st September 2011 and will run in conjunction with a further exhibition of contemporary images featuring F1 motor racing.

Here Comes The Reverie

posted 2 Jun 2011 03:08 by Anthony Carroll   [ updated 7 Oct 2011 07:45 by Tony Carroll ]

3 - 30 June 2011
"Here Comes the Reverie" is a new British contemporary art exhibition making its debut in Sheffield at the Coterie Gallery'.

Once again the gallery is first in exhibiting ground braking work, featuring 6 Sheffield based artists experimenting with the traditional medium of watercolour to create varying degrees of unnerving and unusual subject matter. Their intention is to make and present paintings that intrigue the viewer enough to construct their own stories.

They do this by using imagery that ranges from the eerie silence of deserted familiar suburbia, through to visions that seem to be from dreams or nightmares which take the viewer out of the comfort zone traditionally associated with watercolours.

Nothing is finite, ideas are left hanging, presenting the viewer with a meaningful see sawing where the medium is capable of subverting the subject and vice versa.

The Exhibition opens on Friday 3rd with a preview between 6pm-8pm that is open to the public where the artists Patrick Bridge, Andy Cropper. Dominic Mason, Jade Morris, Jane Walker and Sean Williams will be in attendance to discuss and talk about their work.

"Here Comes The Reverie" runs until the 30th June.
