Prior to the advent of quantum physics, special relativity, and other highly theoretical physics, cosmology was primarily the realm of natural philosophers.
The importance of philosophy in science has been greatly diminished over time as physicists have developed ever more supposedly scientific theories that attempt to explain the physical functions of the universe.
The reason why philosophy is so important to cosmology is because it relies on rational and logical though processes that force us to reject arguments which are not rational or logical.
As chaotic as the universe may appear to us, its logical order is immense. Our ability to describe mathematically a huge number of physical laws is remarkable. This underlying order that follows a set of inscribed natural laws allows us to use logic and reason to deduce a great number of things about the cosmos without ever calculating a single equation.
On this page I'm going to present various philosophers to you. Some of them at first may appear to have nothing to do with cosmology. I think you will find the connection starts to become apparent the more you realize that conscious thought is the most remarkable, miraculous, and mind blowing aspect of the universe we live in. Its one area of science that math has truly failed us. There are no mathematical formulas that describe self-awareness.
A complete picture of the cosmos must also be able to explain the origin and function of self-awareness and intelligence.
