CORTEZ LEOPARD SHARKS SWIM TEAM Come join the Leopard Sharks Swim Team! You will have LOTS of fun, meet new friends, and improve your swimming skills, with focus on the four basic strokes.
WHO CAN JOIN? The Cortez Leopard Sharks is open to all levels of swimmers. There is no exact minimum age, but most children are 5-6 before they are ready for swim team. To join the team, swimmers should be comfortable in the water and have some basic swimming skills. When a child is able to swim the width of the pool independently, any stroke, and practice for one hour without parent support they are ready to join the Sharks!
WHEN ARE THE PRACTICES? Spring and fall practices (at the Rec Center) are held two evenings a week, usually Tuesday/Thursday. Summer practices (at the Outdoor Pool) are held five days a week. Practices are split between beginners, intermediate, and advanced swimmers, with coaches determining the appropriate practice group for each child.
WHEN/WHERE ARE THE SWIM MEETS? Swimmers can compete at invitational meets in Western Colorado, and at qualifying meets at the regional and state level. Meets are held on weekends from late May through early August. Swimmers can compete in as many or as few meets as they chose; there is no minimum requirement for competitive swimming. Meets are limited during the fall season.
WHAT ARE THE COSTS? Swimmers must pay Leopard Shark registration fees and state registration/insurance; for 2008 this totals about $100. Fees are reduced for multiple swimmers in the same family. Some scholarship funds may be available. Team swimming suits or t-shirts are an additional (optional) expense.
Swimmers must also pay pool entrance fees. They must have a Rec Center pass (or punch passes) for spring/fall practices, and must have EITHER a Rec Center annual pass or outdoor pool pass for summer practices. |
