General Information about Galveston, TX
Galveston is a city located on Galveston Island in the Gulf of Mexico. It has been used as a port for pirates, Mexico, and the Republic of Texas. It was one of the largest cotton ports in the world competing with near by New Orleans in the late 19th century. The 1900 Galveston Hurricane holds the record for the deadliest natural disaster to hit the United States. Galveston is one of the most vulnerable place to hurricanes in the U.S. because of its low elevation and single escape route that leads into the congested Houston area.
On September 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike made landfall on Galveston Island with winds of 110 miles per hour and a 14-foot storm surge. The storm surge went around the Galveston Seawall and flooded the island through the storm sewers and the unprotected bay side of the island. Many residents remained on the island during the storm. Ike left the island without electricity, gas, water pressure, or basic communication. Public housing projects were some of the hardest hit areas.
