Road Racing

The Racing World

Developed in the late eighteen hundreds, road racing entered the sports scene in Western Europe to quickly become one of the most popular endurance physical activities.  In today’s day and age, only one with a reasonable bike and relative fitness can find a race to participate in.  The season is held in the spring and riders are placed into different tiers based on past performance.  The men’s categories are A (cat 1, 2,3), B (cat 3, 4), C, D, Intro.  The female races are broken up into A (cat 1,2,3), B, C, and Intro.

What is great about the Intro races is that there are clinics held and half of the race is coach.  This is a great way to enter the sport of cycling.

Along with different groups to race with, there are four main types of races that riders can choose from.

  • Criterium – Also known as Crits, these races are based on a time with the course ranging in length from .5 – 1 mile.

  • Road – When one thinks of road bikes, these are the races that come to mind.  The lengths range from 10 -100 miles.

  • Circuit – These races are a happy medium between the long road races and the painfully short Crits.  A racer completes as many laps around a 3 -8 mile course in an allotted amount of time.

  • Time Trial – Performed individually or as a team of four, riders race tightly or solo and race against the clock.

The season takes place in the spring and all levels of racers are welcomed with open arms.
