Mountain Biking

About this Upcoming Sport

Mountain biking can be best explained an off-roading sport.  It includes activities such as taking jumps from the remains of fallen trees, climbing over boulders, speeding down steep terrain, and the exploration of unpaved trails.  Developed in the 1960s from the European sport cyclocross, the sport has continued to grow in popularity over the years.  If interested, riders can also race in the fall.  At Cornell University, anyone interested can meet up with other riders to expand he or her skills and ride on some of the greatest trails in North America.

If a rider is ready to take a step in the competitive direction, races held in the fall can accommodate any person.  There are A, B, and C Men’s races and A and B races for women.  The atmosphere is laid back and new comers are welcome. Along with different categories, there are also different types of races.

  • Cross Country (XC) - Races that range from 6 to 20 miles in length.

  • Short Track Cross Country (STXC) – These are completive races that see how many times one can go around a short track (.5 -1 mile in length) in an allotted amount of time. Can also be done in teams of three with a coed option.

  •  Downhill(DH) – Ranging from beginner to expert, these races take technical skills to maneuver speedily down a mountain.  These races are usually held at ski resorts.

Here in Ithaca, we are lucky to have some of the best trails in New England, and arguably in the country.  Shindagin Hallow State Park was rated highly for its technical difficulty and scenery.  Also, there is a trail for any level rider.  Come join us today!
