ERP: Catalyzing change at Hindustan Copper Limited

Hindustan Copper Limited

(A Government of India Enterprise)

INTRODUCTION

Enterprise Resource Planning system, or in short ERP, is being implemented at Hindustan Copper Limited to integrate operations across the many functions & locations in our organization. The objective is to create an automated environment which provides a seamless, organization wide system.

ERP system is therefore, designed to model the many cross-functional linkages in our day to day operations and transactions. The holistic view, so developed in the system, is expected to facilitate optimization of HCL processes, achieve synergies and reduce costs.

Further, by capturing information and data generated across all elements of the value chain, this system would prove to be a powerful tool, enabling analysis and planning not only on the financial side but also on the operation side.

ERP.  With its many benefits, would also necessitate changes in the way we do our business, our processes and practices. For instance, several processes have been re-designed to incorporate industry best practices which will help HCL enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of its resources. Adoption of these best practices would also mean that processes have to be standardized and a common codification methodology is followed across locations.

This document attempts to outline these changes across all areas of HCL’s operations. In each of these areas, benefits catalyzed by the ERP implementation have also been highlighted.

Expected benefits

  • Improved productivity of mine resources.
  • System checks and validations to prevent duplication of jobs.
  • Improved reliability in mine operations.
  • Seamless flow of real time data and information to and fro downstream operations.
  • Optimization of operations and resource utilization.
  • Consistency, accuracy and timeless of reported parameters.

Overview of Changes

  • Mining cycle has been uniformly defined across and for all types of mines.
    1. Industry best practice adopted in defining the system in ERP from Planning to Survey to Execution and the associated feedback loop
    2. Associated reporting mechanisms to be uniformly developed
  • Industry best practices and localized pockets of excellence within HCL leveraged to introduce process improvements / enhancements
    1. Planning function is envisaged to play a more central role in controlling overall mines operations.
    2. Reconciliation of ore to be carried out on a daily basis.
    3. Locators defined uniquely for each section of the mine area, level, hole benches.
  • Automation introduced to remove non-value adding manual interventions.
