Storm Damages the Drill House, home of the Copper Country Curling Club

July 2, 2011

A brief and intense wind storm caused significant damage to the Drill House, home to the Copper Country Curling Club in Calumet.

Major damage was done to the non-curling portion of the structure, with the cupola roof essentially being ripped off and deposited behind the building. The roof of the adjacent structure was blown off and rammed into the side of the building adjacent to the parking area.

The extent of the damage and the impact it will have on the use of the structure will have to be assessed by professional engineers, presumably some time after the weekend. The building is owned by the township and I have been told that insurance paperwork will be started on Tuesday.

Our stones and equipment were unharmed and are secure in the building at this time, though we may want to remove those to another location soon.

Beyond that we will all have to be patient and wait to see how this pan's out.

Member Bob Mark Passes

It is with great sadness that I must report that first year Copper Country Curling Club member Bob Mark has died of an apparent stroke. Bob curled Tuesday evenings with teammates Mike Gretz, Paul Eisenman, and Walt Milligan. He was with the School of Business faculty at Michigan Tech.

Bob was an enthusiastic member of the club. He came to the Drill House when a call for help was issued. In fact, I last saw Bob less than 2 weeks ago at the Drill House clean up session. He will be missed.
