Day 29 - Super Mario Kart There was never any doubt Mario Kart would make this list, in fact the only doubt right now is just how many of the sequels I put in here...as Mario Kart as a whole has brought me many many great multiplayer memories and stands out to me as a series where not a single one has let me down, they've all been fun, and they've all got unique touches to them that don't make them feel so much like "sequels" they feel more like individual experiences... Experiences that still hold up great too this day. I'll go into more detail about the others, if and when they come up...for now though, focus is on the original. Super Mario Kart wasn't the first time Mario had took a departure from running and jumping, as he'd already cameo'd in various things such as "Punch Out", "NES Golf", a bunch of "Game & Watch" games, and others. HOWEVER! This was definitely the first big non-"platforming" title using Mario's name that gained a huge success, and it's perhaps "Super Mario Kart" that inspired Nintendo to use the Mario title and characters in making a whole host of other spin offs, knowing that the public accepted anything with "Mario" in as a safe purchase when it came to buying a new game (back before this here internets, or the easy availability of reliable video game reviews). Ok, so on to the actual game. Super Mario Kart was an absolutely amazing game at the time. Personally in the 16 bit days it was quite rare I'd find a racing game that I'd keep on coming back too, as a lot of games back then just seemed to fade off after a set amount of hours of playing. Super Mario Kart however, I could always revisit and have fun with. There was always fun (and frustration) in trying to win the hardest cups against the CPU. Which always provided a real challenge! Not only due to you needing to be a god at collecting enough coins off the track (used for increasing top speed), but you'd constantly be having the CPU crush your dreams by lobbing items perfectly placed in front of you as you make that vital corner, and BOOO to the unfairness of the CPU having character specific weapons we couldn't have. Then there was multi-player. Setting scores between friends on the couch! Funnily enough, back in the Super Mario Kart days a lot of my racing multiplayer was less about being competitive, and more about trying to ensure me and whomever I was playing with finished #1 and #2 at the end of it (like we're a Formula 1 team or something). Where as nowadays in Mario Kart I'm all about keeping cool and trying to stay off peoples radar, whilst secretly in my head trying to plan for "what ifs" and having a weapon on stand by to take out a friend if he/ she thinks of sabotaging my podium place. One place I wasn't so coy was "BATTLE MODE". Here all gloves were off, the single aim was to kick ass or have your ass kicked. Seeing as it was only "2 player" the best you could do with group gatherings was do a 'winner stays on' rule, and although I've never read it anywhere, I'd like to think that playing "Super Mario Kart" multiplayer in the Nintendo offices was when they realised that being able to play a game like Mario Kart with 4 players instead of just 2 would be the next big thing, and things like Super Mario Kart HAD to of inspired Nintendo to put 4 controller ports on the trusty lovable N64. Super Mario Kart will always stand out with it's great track selection (as flat as the worlds were ^_^), the feather!, the inclusion of "Koopa Troopa", the kart handling that has since become very specific to only 'Super Mario Kart' and (the also great) Mario Kart: Super Circuit, some very catchy musical beats, and it's challenge.
