I made this recording in the waterway next to the railway line at Porirua, near Wellington in New Zealand. I dropped the DolphnEar Pro hydrophone over the side of a suspension foot bridge. There were some ducks swimming nearby, but the water was dark and polluted (there were signs to that effect nearby), so I couldn't see anything in the water. So I really don't know what this is! My suspicion is that it's a Southern Bell Frog, Litoria raniformis – that at least is based on thisidentification chart.
There is also a sound recording here but I think that's above the water, while this is below.
Other details: The recorder is a Fostex FR-2LE, and the extract below starts with a crash, like the hydrophone hitting something. Then there's another unidentified sound, and from about 28" in, the frog-like sound starts. It appears about 8 times. I turned up the gain near the start, and subsequently EQed it slightly to reduce the hiss.
Any suggestions about this recording gladly received!
