In contrast to the usual function of a shop, which is to maximize profits, Connie’s Bakery strives to maximize its ability to give. Owned by Connie Milstein, this unique bakery and gift shop has chosen to go for the market share in donations by giving away all its profits to a variety of charitable causes. Certainly unique among stores, Connie Milstein explains why she has chosen this unusual business model for her enterprise. “I believe in doing well by doing good,” is how Connie sizes up the motive for opening this bakery. One of the beneficiaries of Connie’s Bakery is known as Food-PATCH. This organization distributes food to soup kitchens and other food distributing centers for the poor throughout the United States. How appropriate for a bakery to help others get the basic foods that they need. Connie’s Bakery and Gift Shop opened in 2005 in Mt. Kisco, New York, and has since opened in a second location in the lobby of the Northern Westchester Hospital, not too far away. |
