Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Congaree National Park is its tremendous height. In North America, only the conifer forests of the Western U.S. coastal region are substantially taller. East of the Mississippi, just a few small patches of white pine and some cove forests in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are taller, and no place can match the sheer acreage of tall trees (perhaps 10,000 acres of trees 130-160 feet tall). When compared to all of the world's forests, Congaree National park is among the tallest.
