Present Employer: Shakopee Area Catholic School

Position
: Middle School Teacher (6th grade Reading, Language Arts, and Religion, 7th grade Math)

Professional Blurb
: Teaching in Catholic School has been a wonderful experience for me and I appreciate my hard-working colleagues as we have such a variety of talents that make our school a unique and positive environment. Born and raised in Shakopee, I returned to the school I attended for my teaching career.  I have been teaching for six years: one year in third grade and five years in the middle school.  During my time in the middle school, I have taught many different subjects except for my concentration: Social Studies.  I would really like to teach 7th grade World Geography or 8th grade American Studies when the opportunity presents itself; however, I truly enjoy what I am currently teaching.

Personal Blurb: My husband and I met in college almost eight years ago, but we did not start dating until three years later and his move out to Colorado.  Visiting each other on weekends for a year and a half was a challenge, but my trips out to Colorado were so fun as I picked up some new hobbies.  He made the big move back to Minnesota in February 2006 (yes, I flew out out there just to drive the 18 hours back with him).  We were married in August 2007 and welcomed our first child, Isabel Elizabeth, on March 30! Check out photos of Isabel and keep up with the Mousel Family at http://katiandbutter.blogspot.com (note: this a personal blog for our family, so there is little to no professional content posted).

Reflection on CI555 Instructional Technology:

I enjoy using new technology, but often have not felt comfortable enough to use it in my classroom. What this class has done for me is introduced technology that could enhance lessons and engage my students more.  Before I feel comfortable bringing any type technology into the classroom, I really need to have explored it thoroughly myself.  One aspect of this class I have appreciated the most is the time we have been given to delve into the technology presented.

The class Wiki inspired my group’s ITR project, which I could definitely use with my students.  I had originally thought about using blogs, but have since reconsidered because of internet safety concerns.  I will continue, however, to look for blog sites that are contained and safe for my students.  Our school website has a blog feature, but I have not had a chance to explore if it would work how I envision using a blog in my classroom.

An aspect that concerns me with a class Wiki that I know may be an issue when implementing it into the classroom is all the variables.  I have many ideas on how I can use the Wiki, but it will be a guess, check, and revise process as to which way will work best.  Our Wiki for this class has worked really well; however, things change greatly when the class size increases from 13 to 24 plus.  Next school year, I am excited to try a class Wiki, but with implementing any new technology, I know a lot of patience will be needed.

Somewhat Professional Videos:
Every year to kick off Catholic Schools Week, the faculty puts on a little program, SACS Idol, to entertain the students.  Once the students go back to their classrooms they vote for their favorite and at mass later that week the winner is announced.  The 2010 SACS Idol Champions are featured below:

The next video might give away one my two truths and a lie, but I am very proud of these girls so I will make that sacrifice.  I have been dancing in some capacity since I was three.  Dance is something I love to do and be around.  My latest endeavor in the dance world (along with a teaching colleague) was starting a dance team for 6th-8th graders at our school.  We are in our third year and for some reason our numbers sky rocketed from 13 to 39!  Here they are performing at Holy Family Catholic High School (only their second performance):

Oh, Kati, I'm SO glad that you shared Thriller with the world. <Sarcasm font>
And I too, enjoyed reading about little Mufasa. That name is going to come back to haunt him/her! <No sarcasm font>

Kati, Moodle is used in most of the district. It is a free sight. We can upload documents for students. My students check Moodle pages regularly. It is great to have students come back to school after being gone with completed homework.

I agree Kati--that it's quite threatening to think of using a wiki with a class of 32. Or if i have a wiki for all of Spanish IIB it could be 140 students.. so i'd hvae to do four wiki's? There alot of unknown--but we will be great resources for each other on how to work it. Good luck! Congrats on the precious bundle of joy--Isabel!! : )

Kati I understand your consernse. I have 180 some students and I started a forum. There has been a lot of growing in this project. I hope that it will continue to work but I am still on the learning curve. I have shared with my students of the newness of what we are doing and now have 180 allies to help improve the forum site.
