Home page formatting

posted Mar 28, 2010 1:02 PM by Tania Smith   [ updated Mar 28, 2010 1:09 PM ]

Learning from what I see on your own pages, I decided to add more visual texture to the home page. What do you think?  Here is how I did the black on pink, followed by the black on grey.

How?

For a heading like Announcements,
  • I created the headings using the editing tools "Format - level 2 heading."
  • Then I highlighted it with a light pink.
For my tagline underneath it, I just highlighted it with grey.

HTML tweak

Sometimes the highlight does not continue across the width (as I wanted it to) so I had to tweak the HTML.

Here is what the HTML looks like for my heading and tagline

<h3 style="background-color: rgb(244, 204, 204); color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Announcements</h3>
<font style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" color="#444444"><span style="background-color: rgb(243, 243, 243);">What's new on this website?</span>

You can click "HTML" in your editing toolbar at any time to view/change the HTML coding

Tip

Search the code by keyword by pressing Ctrl+F
when you are viewing HTML, instead of scanning through the ocean of HTML to find the right place.

Tab icons or "Favicons"

posted Mar 17, 2010 11:25 PM by Tania Smith   [ updated Mar 28, 2010 12:56 PM ]

FYI I changed some of your EC team management sites' Tab icons so that I could distinguish your sites from each other in browser tabs.  I also changed our own website's tab icon to this:

Google Sites enables you to choose the Tab icon, or "FAVICON," that appears on browser tabs, like the Bb icon on a Blackboard tab.

How?

Favicons can be generated by
  1. Creating a very simple image
  2. Processing it through a favicon generator like http://www.favicon.co.uk/
  3. Uploading it into the site. Click the "More Actions" drop-down tab in the upper right, then Manage Site, and then in the "Attachments" area upload your new favicon.ico file at the top level.  It must be named exactly "favicon.ico" and be at the top level of the site.

New Audio and PPT files for your site

posted Mar 17, 2010 10:34 AM by Tania Smith

I've just uploaded into your Inherited Documents folder (in Bb course documents) some files within the "All Photos and Media With Consent" folder --

1. SERVICE LEARNING AND SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION -- I've added a 1-page pdf with links to the Mp3 files for the Telelearning Seminar that I and Breanna did on Service-learning and Education for Sustainable Development.  You can take audio clips from me and Bre and make podcasts of them, and you can also quote in print what participants said during the telelearning seminar.  It is published online; I give advice on how to cite it.

2. PEER MENTORING -- See 3 Power points and a visual model that explain the program at the U of C.  One of them focuses on the relation between peer mentoring and service-learning.

Co-authoring pages in your team site

posted Mar 17, 2010 10:32 AM by Tania Smith

I just went in to change the wording on co-authorship in the 35% Team Website and Presentation assignment so that it explains that we don't want too many pages to be co-authored.  It adds too much complexity and it also defeats the purpose of having each student and peer reviewer held accountable individually for the quality of their pages.
