Today during tutorial, we "split" the class into two rooms from 1:00 to 1:30 -- editorial coordinators went with Carmen to a separate room in our faculty office and met as a team for the first time. They were able to articulate many important and time-sensitive questions that Carmen & I are able to answer within a day. Hopefully this meeting has reassured ECs that they will be provided with the support they need to fulfill their unique roles. Why did we do this? Well, Carmen and I have been discussing how to provide enough support to Editorial Coordinators and facilitate learning and collaboration among them. At first we tried to find a time outside of class when ECs could meet with us, but a single time was not possible with ECs' schedules, and we felt it was urgent that we do meet with them this week. We believe it is a better solution, both more ethical and more feasible, to incorporate EC meetings within part of scheduled class time. While the ECs met, the rest of the students stayed with Dr. Smith. They applied concepts from the prior 50-min lecture to an activity that simulated their decisions they would need to make when inheriting material to edit and publish on their blogs. We hope their discussion & engagement gives the students more confidence and ideas with which to approach their roles as editors of the inherited material. From 1:30 to 1:50 Editorial Coordinators returned to the class and held team meetings. After class, Carmen and I scheduled 4-5 future EC meetings (2 of them optional) at appropriate times this term. |
