Hello, I'm Dr. Tania Smith, Assistant Professor of Communications Studies.
COMS 463: Advanced Professional and Technical Communication is a course offered by the Faculty of Communication and Culture at the University of Calgary. This course gives students the opportunity to learn professional and technical communication theories & concepts, issues, common practices, technologies, and skills. I have enjoyed teaching this course ever since I first co-developed the course upon my arrival at U of C in 2002. It is exciting to see the huge learning gains made by students, most of whom are very capable and willing to take on the challenges of a real project for a client outside the course context. We are engaging in service-learning, a rigorous method of active and collaborative learning. This learning method is founded on a community-university
partnership and the belief that our students learn deeply while
producing valuable and useful communication products. Our instructional team has integrated students' service projects
with the academic goals and content of this course. Students learn how
to connect textbooks and lectures to communication practice. They also
come to understand the rhetorical, ethical and social challenges of
communicating with multiple audiences and organizations. Service-learning is also the topic of our website development projects this term. See our Community Service-Learning (CSL) Info page for more.
