By providing free tools the companies get extra information to analyze to help them develop their products. You get a free scan. Everybody benefits.These programs change constantly. Usually, they aren't difficult to operate. The tools usually consist of download, scan and fix -- the basics. Most of the ones I use scan AND fix. Some free scans just scan and tell you to buy their software. ALL the scans REQUIRE you to use Internet Explorer. Right click "Internet Explorer" and select "Run as administrator." You will also have to agree to install an Active X (may be termed "Add-On). Just right-click on the vanilla colored bar that will drop down at the top of the screen and agree to the Active X. Windows XP does not require you to "Run as administrator" because it is ALWAYS running as an administrator. Just open Internet Explorer like you always do and install the add-on if you have to. These scans go from my favorite to my least favorite. There are two "cloud" tools. Aggressive Scan & Fix: This program is new and powerful. You may lose some minor programs but it gets great reviews from the experts. TrendMicro Housecall (Cloud) Kaspersky (Not currently available) Quick Scan & Fix: Scan Only: Computer Associate (CA) Threat Scanner McAfee Free Scan Symantec (Norton) Free Online Scanners Other "not so familiar" names.
