Twelve years after I got out of the Marine Corps, I became an Air Force JAG legal officer via direct commission, Oct. 1979 to Oct. 1982 at Sheppard AFB, Texas.

The photo will enlarge but will go back to its original size, then click again and it will remain the larger size.
We did a lot of courts-martial, (general and special CMs), administrative discharge boards, law seminars around the base, advised all base and unit commanders from 2 Lts to Major General, gave legal advice to military personnel and dependents, and more.
I got to go downtown Wichita Falls once a week and prosecute civilians in federal court (US District Court for the Northern District of Texas) for crimes committed on the base itself. They could not have a uniformed JAG prosecuting unless he or she was first appointed a Special Asst US Attorney, obviously a temporary thing so you could prosecute civilians.
(The Marine Corps is the only service that does NOT offer direct commissions to lawyers, doctors, dentists and chaplains, the idea being that every Marine is a basic rifleman. A candidate for Marine JAG must first complete OCS, then The Basic School, and only then go to the formal JAG school.)
