THIS CAME IN ON SATURDAY MORNING, 7-16-11 FROM LEN KAIMI (Top Kaimi)-------

Hi Dave,
Did you know that Max Kerr passed away? In my quarterly retired magazine in the Taps section Kerr is listed. The entry reads he retired in Jan 75 and passed Mar 2011. His middle initial was G. which didn't know but it could be more than one Kerr. I remember Max as a rough/tough sort of guy as a SSgt. I think he ran a section in the 'R' branch section of Bldg 40. I believed he lived in San Pat. I think he is in one of those photos with all the SNCOs. I'm not sure if all the troops are aware of this as not everyone receives the Semper Fidelis mag.

When we were in Puerto Rico together, it had been:

Only 100 years since Lincoln was assassinated in Washington D.C.
89 years since Custer was killed at the Little Bighorn.
Just 67 years since the Spanish-American War.
64 short years after Teddy Roosevelt was president.
23 years after Guadalcanal was fought during WW II
3 years since the Cuban Missile Crisis
Only 2 years after JFK's assassination.
Viet Nam was just starting to really escalate.
And it had only been 20 years since the end of World War II.
Does all this make you feel somewhat old?

Wednesday, May 26, 2010------ 530pm I got an email from Jake Bowditch's wife that he suffered a stroke Sunday morning, is in intensive care, is very ill, and he lost mobility on his right side, it is touch and go and that is about all they know right now. Jake was not at Co G but he and I were together at 2nd Mar Div, Camp Lejeune, NC for one year. We were also in school at the same time at Pensacola, Florida, did not know each other there, Co K was a big place, but we both graduated the same day with, coincidentally, the same final average.

George Salinas took a trip to Puerto Rico this past summer, 2010, and on 5-24-10 sent me the following email about his visit there:

He gave me permission to share this with you.

"I visited Puerto Rico last year during the summer.  My son was there on Air Force business and they allowed him a suite in one of the finer hotels near San Juan alongside the water (This would never have happened if he were in the Marines).  He invited me to go and revisit the past.  IT was a wonderful visit not having to worry about shift work or inspections.  I even went out to visit Sabana Seca and the base is still there.  I attempted to enter but they would not allow me.  I was able to walk around the front and take some pictures of the old barracks, the Company office and the Sabana Seca community which has grown and changed a lot.  The US is apparently attempting to return the property to the Puerto Rican government but the information I got is that the base has some pollutants that need to be cleaned up. If you want to publish the photos let me know.  I would be glad to share them.  Puerto Rico is beautiful.  I even took some pictures of Luna Street.

Take care."

There is a book out now called Devil Dog Diary. I read it and it is great. It shows how little boot camp has changed over the years. The author went through in 1995. This is a must read, folks.
Also, go to www.devildogdiary.com

The author, GySgt Will Price, and I, have talked. He is at 8th and I, probably headed out to Pendleton at some point for his next duty station. He enjoys hearing from the "old timers" like us.

Monterey Calif reunion Sept 2007 had a big Co G crowd there. Other reunions had very few of us, e.g. 2008 near Wash DC. and 2002 Portsmouth NH
If you have not joined MCCA you might consider doing so. See their site at Links page.

Colorado Springs reunion in 1998 had a turnout of Co G people totalling 16. That is quite a few, considering that at any one time, the number of Marines in Co G was anywhere from 46 to 50 people.
