More About Midwives

~ Midwives support women throughout the prenatal, birthing and postpartum periods.

~ Midwives are covered by the provincial health care system. If you have a BC Care Card, you do not need to pay for your midwifery care.

~ Midwives support women to birth at home, or in the hospital setting.

~ Midwives can provide access to all the childbearing health services that are available in BC. Ultrasounds, genetic screening, epidurals, etc. are all options that women can choose within midwifery care.

New Parent Resources

~ Welcome ~

Meet our Team!

Barbara and Jeanette are both solo practioners who support each other for holidays and as second birth attendants for home births.
Both of us have other accredited second birth attendants as it is not always possible to attend all of the other midwife's homebirths.

Barbara Purcell (RM)

I trained as a registered nurse in Launceston, Tasmania and worked in a variety of areas prior to midwifery training in 1985. Although initially seeing midwifery training as a way of preparing to return to Canada to work ‘someday’as a nurse, I found that in reality midwifery was to become my passion. Since that time I have been involved in Childbirth education, women’s health, sexual health, lactation consultancy, community nursing and remote area nursing on Flinders Island (Tasmania), Alice Springs and Ltyentye Apurte( Northern Territory).  I completed my Graduate Diploma in Midwifery in 1996 through the University of New England, NSW.

Promoting choice for place of birth, encouraging women to make informed decisions about all aspects of their care by providing them with current research has always been an important aspect of my practice. Learning about and experiencing the extensive range of ‘normality’ from attending women’s labours and births remains exciting. It is an honour to be invited to attend women during pregnancy / birth and witnessing how the process can empower women and their families as they begin and continue their family journey
.

Barbara is supported in her work as a midwife by her partner Dave, midwife support extraordinaire.  Together they are the parents of a son and a daugther and grandparents of one grandson.

From January 2010 I will be spending 3 months of the year in Australia - January through to the end of March and will not be taking clients whose expected date of birth is during this time.  While I'm away Jeanette will cover my practice in Kelowna.

  Jeanette Kleger (RM)

Jeanette Kleger is both a Registered Midwife and a Naturopathic Physician with over fourteen years of experience in birth and holistic medicine.

Jeanette received her bachelor's degree in psychology from California State University at Sacramento in 1991. She became a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine upon graduation from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon in 1995. During her naturopathic education Jeanette undertook specialty training to provide natural childbirth care in out-of hospital settings. Jeanette also completed a degree of midwifery at National College of Midwifery. She also has trained as a certified HypnoBirthing childbirth educator. She worked in Hawaii and upstate New York as a midwife and naturopath in integrated health care practice. And for the last two years she worked in the Fraser Valley attending home and hospital births.

Jeanette is married with two younger children. She has two busy boys ages 6 and 8, who keep her smiling and active. She discovered raising shildren is the most rewarding as well as the most challenging job she does.
