Workshop One -Recording Techniques with
Michelle Rayner, ABC Radio National

9:30am to 12:30pm, ACMI

  • Making the most out of your recording equipment
  • Managing and maximising your recoding environment
  • Troubleshooting: all the things that can go wrong
  • The sonic possibilities of story-telling’  we’ll listen to some short extracts from audio documentaries which meld oral history and  other sound story-telling elements.
  • Participants would bring their own digital recorder to this session
  • Participants would take away an info sheet with ‘tips’ to maximise the quality of their recording
  • 25 participants maximum

Workshop Two  - Video Recording Techniques with  Catherine Gough-Brady       
1:30pm to 4:30pm, ACMI
  • Basic techniques of video recording
  • Differences between video and audio recording
  • A hands-on, practical session'
  • 25 participants maximum

About the Presenter: Catherine Gough-Brady trained at the Victoria College of the Arts in documentary and studied history at the University of Adelaide. She has created works in a variety of media, including radio (Radio National’s RadioEye and Hindsight), TV (political ads, What I Wrote), online (www.snodger.com.au/catherine/ ), DVD (Counihan Connection) and cinema release (Time to Go John). She writes documentary criticism for a variety of specialist journals, including Dox, RealTime and Screenhub.

Her current projects are a documentary on Marshall McLuhan, a transmedia series on our cultural and historical relationship to fire in the landscape, and a series on Asian arts.

Catherine lives in Melbourne, Australia.

Workshop Four  - Engaging People 'on the Margins' with Jen Barrkman & Kris Plowman, Red Thread Stories

9:30am to 12:30pm, State Library of Victoria

  • Engaging vulnerable participants in Oral History
  • How to connect and engage with people on the margins & vulnerable storytellers.
  • Learn tools and applications of how to better engage with vulnerable story tellers, particularly in group situations. assist vulnerable people so they can subsequently be involved in developing digital and written stories, participate in oral histories or to share their story in public forums.
  • 20 participants maximum

Workshop Five  - Interpreting Memories with Alistair Thomson, Monash University
1:30pm to 4:30pm, State Library of Victoria

  • How do we interpret and use the memories we record in oral history interviews?
  • In this participatory workshop, we will explore a number of different appoaches, including narrative (micro) analysis and thematic (macro) interpretation,
  • You will try out different interpretative methods using examples from a number of interview projects.
  • 25 participants maximum

All Pre Conference workshops will be held at ACMI Studios or the Conference Centre of the State Library of Victoria

We will open registrations for these workshops shortly, but you can register your interest during the conference registration process.

All workshops will have a maximum of 20-25 participants.

Costs:   $30 (concession) or $40 (full) for half day workshops
            $40 (concession) or $50.00 (full) for full day workshop
