  • A placemat is a protective table pad usually made of paper, plastic or cloth for restaurants and households. Asian-style placemats may feature thin slats of bamboo or colourful beads. The term is derived from the mat being put at a person's "place" (chair) at a table.

Start sewing 1 inch before the first hash mark

Sew on the chalk line. Start sewing before the hash mark that starts the 3 inches to be left open. Stitch with a normal seam stitch length - 2 to 2.5. Back stitch or lock stitch, stitch up to the hash mark and stop with needle down.

Steam press both sides. Press before trimming the seam allowance. Let cool. *It works well to sew two of the placemats, leave then to cool, then sew two more. By then the first two are cool and ready to trim.
